The drapes must be lowered to just brush the floor or add on a beautiful contrast fabric to bottom ( at least 5 inches). The chair doesn't go with the room. Either recover in a fun print ( orange , yellow or blue - retro) or take it out. The floor lamp needs an upbeat shade ( linen maybe?) and move to behind the couch corner. LOVE THE DININGTABLE! Recover dining chairs in subtle fabric ( perhaps houndstooth or small paisley) in a color that coordinates with your new recovered chair and added on drape fabric ! Good luck. Nice room proportions and great start.

Oh, and need a large enough rug, perhaps a white shag? Don't go too small.

Hi Monkey Love the consol for your Dining room however it needs a mirror with it. You may wish to consider this one.

Monkey, since you have this wonderful piece you need equally elegant dining furniture to go with. These types of chairs would be a lovely way to bring your room into balance.

With a mirrored buffet in the dining room, I would place something totally different from a mirror above it, and a large painting comes to mind. But we really need to see pictures of your table and chairs and the room to comment much more on the dining room, except to say that your mirrored buffet is beautiful!

I think if you covered the chair in blue, or a small print that was dominantly blue and pulled in some of the colors in the rest of the room; some kind of blue that would match the bluegray that you have going on in the cushions. A painting on the wall with some blues, greens, cream, and brown would pick up the colors in the room. You would want quite a large painting. To create a bit of zip you could then throw in a little bit of a complementary color to the blues, such as a bit of terra-cotta or a burnt orange would give you some punch. The room seems to have good basic bones but could use a bit of zip colour wise, and the large wall could definitely use something. Fruit or flowers in the bowl on the table could also pick up some coour. I don't mind the dining chairs, I like the light colour and would like to see more blue, white, chocolate brown (which would match the weight of the table) or black... Hard to see what colors you have in your rug but you could pick up some of those and put them around the room.

I do not think the chair adds to the room. It is in a random place. I think you should just stick with the sectional. I agree with a previous responder, your curtains are to short "high water" curtains. They should "dust" the floor. Good Luck!

Ok so now I see why everyone has made comments on my curtains. I just looked at my picture again and I had placed our dog bed in front of the curtains so they look short.. I promise they do go all the way down to the floor and "dust the floor". :)

Ha! That is funny & just goes to show you that we are subject to questioning since we are not in the room & dependent on a monitor photo! I couldn't see what all that fuss was about. Here's my 2 cents (I'm sure you were anxiously waiting lol):

The leather chair will serve you better in another location. If it matches the ottoman, I would leave in the room, just not placed there. The back is low enough to place it with the TV facing the sectional. Then use 2 of the dining chairs to decide what else will work in that conversation area. If it's a different leather, take it to another room. Your furniture is awesome! I love the sectional, ottoman, and dining table!

My instinct is that the sectional needs to come away from the wall some. It should look intentional, rather than shoved in the corner. Your window wall is a focal point, but I can't tell if the panel touches the corner wall. If it doesn't, align the back of the sofa with the panel. I think that will make a big difference in the overall balance of the space. While I do love your mirrored buffet, keep it in your dining room. But the table under the TV is not well balanced with the ottoman & sofa. Do you like antiques? Consider taking your time to find a piece that you love, but one that is solid to the floor rather on legs. Shopping for an piece of furniture with history can become a great hobby or addiction - just like Houzz!

Oh gosh, here we go again... someone asks a simple question about a chair and after three comments 'we're' changing the dining room too. It takes a brave person to post photos of their room here.

Anyway, I'm about the only one who thinks the chair is just a bit too small to go with your sectional I guess. You said that you're willing to reupholster it. I could see it working in a funky blue and white fabric, so it will be more of a 'statement' chair. But since you mention the leather is in great condition I'm not sure if you're willing to do that.

(On a side note: your ottoman is the perfect ottoman for another project here on Houzz, who's looking for something like that. Chuckling. I'm thinking that maybe I should put you two in touch with each other. You keep the chair as is, get a really great fabric ottoman and sell this one on to the fellow Houzzer... Hmm... No, don't take that too seriously, it was just the first thing I thought when I saw your pictures.)

I think you need a chair that's a little bit larger, so that it doesn't look dwarfed by your sectional.
(And I like the dining chairs and love the dining table.)

Would you re-take some of these pictures when you have a chance and repost them? These seem to be "night" shots and I bet you have some fluorescent bulbs there as well? I think it is creating a distorted view of what is really there. Try a few during the day, and I'm sure you'll get better feedback :-) Part of the "drapes are too short" illusion (via the dog bed) was probably due to the graininess of the images.

I agree with carolins, the chair would look better if it was taller. The back is about the same height as the sectional. You need some punch of color as well, I can't tell what color your walls are but the blue in the pillows might look good on the wall. What are some of your favorite colors? Don't be shy, Beige is a good background for many colors. You have blue in the pillows repeat that in the DR with a cloth on the table. Paint the DR a soft yellow, it would go well with the blue walls in the LR. Thank you for posting. You've given me the courage to post my own problem room! HAVE FUN!

I agree with a different rug. Creamy shag, put lamp in corner behind couch. I think a big pic on wall, (Art.com) colorful pillows . Dining table and chairs are good. The rug will blend the family room with the chairs. Flower arrangement on table. The chair is fine. You just need a little bit of this and that.

Monkey, you have so many good elements in these spaces, will the mirrored buffet cabinet fit in the small niche? I would hang the art to the right of the niche and still add the mirror,, during dinner parties I would place the hurricanes on the buffet and the warm reflection off the mirror with bring an element of sophistication to your dinner. Keep the dining chairs and have them recovered and have the upholsterer cut off the camel humps and have him/her give them a graceful curve across the top or a graceful arch. I will look for a fun fabric for the chairs.

I think the automan looks great. Is the sectional tan or beige? I would get a chair that is taller and perhaps buy one in the same color as those beautiful pillows on the sectional. Put a pillow in the chair that is that same blue but that also pulls in the color of the automan. Are the drapes white? That same fabric should be used elsewhere in the room, maybe pillows. Its difficult to tell what color the walls are. Maybe pull one of the less prominent colors from the rug as a paint color?

I think you may be able to switch your formal room rug with your family room rug and get a better balance. I agree the chair is slightly too small for the room and so recovering it seems a waste of a perfectly good chair.

It's a beautiful chair, that's for sure; however, it's color makes it disappear in this "beige-y" room and the height is diminished by both the couch size and the dining chairs. I would put it in an office or bedroom that includes pops of color to make this more substantial. I'd also make sure it appears larger in contrast to other furniture in the room. Good luck!

I agree with those who commented that the scale of the chair seems too small. It looks shorter than the couch in height...a little orphan in the room.

Copying some ideas from others but to keep costs down, keep all the furniture but get BIG PILLOWS on the sectional and chair-big ones but not "busy". Look on Etsy.com for great things at great prices but consider the patterns that Serra Design recommended but really make them big=22-24" with a few 18". Rug is too busy and outdated-go to Homegoods or look on-line for a sisal or jute one. There's a type (can't remember what it's called) that is soft on the feet. And the dining room chairs-draped and removable slipcovers but loose ones that are also sold on Etsy. Search for people who make them and nearly everyone on there does custom stuff (again, really reasonable prices-don't NOT look!) Serra Design had great pattern ideas and the Etsy people can find similar or will use what you send them (and actually maybe the BIG pillows for the sectional can be the same or similar prints as the dining room slipcovers-will tie it all in). Or Craig's List or Angie's for people who sew. The lamp looks too small-how about a larger shade?
Agree with the person who said to just get rid of the curtains all together. The wood shutters are nice and the curtains are not needed. And the art-be careful. Don't have to spend a fortune but get 1-2 big pieces (not a lot of small ones). The ones someone suggested above are good and can be found at Marshalls, Home Goods, etc. Or the big mirror someone suggested is a great idea to fill a wall. If you want to add personal photo "art" and want to throw in a little "whimsy", go to canvas pop. They can make a large art "piece" from a photograph (Large as in like 36" square). And they can suggest ideas if your photo's resolution isn't sharp enough (most aren't for something that size but they can suggest things. Make the ottoman a coffee table by just moving it and didn't you start by asking about the chair? Don't reupholster leather, especially if it's in good shape. But it doesn't match the other leather so get a big throw (Restoration Hardware has them) and fold it and drape over the hair when not in use. When you ARE sitting in the chair, wrap yourself in the throw!

Just two thoughts: yes, your curtains are too short. Just lower the rod - they don't have to be hung right at the ceiling line.

Leather can usually be dyed. I suppose this MIGHT be a DIY project, but on an expensive chair, I wouldn't do it. Contact a good upholsterer - they might do it, or be able to refer you to someone who can. I am not sure what color you can get, given the base color, but it would be pretty to do a color: either a mid-green or soft aqua blue.

I think everything look great. Just needs a punch of bright colour and can be done inexpensively by adding bright drapes, art and pillows.

I am no decorator but my opinion is to stay more stream lined with your taste in this room...the clean lines with the sectional screams clean lines everywhere. I think a contrast color but a neutral would be better for the drapes and also lower the drapes to where they hit the floor. Keep it simple and I think you will be surprised how much you will enjoy this room.

Here's my nickel's worth:

The leather chair looks fine with the sofa, which has rounded arms, and with the leather ottoman;
1. Paint the walls the blue of the pillow or, if you feel daring, a medium chocolate with blue trim;
2. Hang something like that triptych of the avenue of trees (posted by Soul Art), which has warm colors to pull in all the browns and beiges, and blue water to tie together the walls and pillows;
3. Add at least 1 more pillow in one of the orange/red tones from the painting to add to the sofa (put one blue-toned pillow on the leather chair;
4. Replace the nesting tables, by the chair with something heavier-looking, a wood table or maybe that box by the sofa (it will ground that corner and give the chair more substance);
5. Too bad you can't change the drapes - a gold, pale orange, brick or pale blue would help. May they are dyable?
6. The dining chairs are a pretty good shape for there, but they need visual interest - Slipcovers maybe?

Hi Monkey, I see why some think your drapes are short... in your first photo. In your second and fourth photo I think i see a puppy bed in the corner of the room and in front of the drape, causing the drape to appear shorter. Good luck with all the suggestions!! the style and proportions of the chair go well with the rest of the furniture. All the beige shades in the room are kind of boring in my opinion. I would consider bringing in chocolate brown, or teal, or rich yellow accents.

I dont think you should block off the window with the sofa

I have drapes that length because I have 3 cats (thus my ID name) and if they were floor length, the bottom of the drapes would always be covered in cat hair. As it is, I have to Swiffer sweep every day and the drapes would always be in the way.

Sherril, where would you put the sofa?

I don't mind the chair but it's place is way off balance. Either move it to the right nearer the sofa so your focal point is the tv center which is what needs weight & height. Get or modify it to be more bulky to hold the weight of the sectional. The drapes are ok, just hung too high, Either lower them to just above the windows or add a valance over th entire top to again add weight to help balance that huge sectional. Then if you are going to use a chair use 2 on this side to again balance the weight. Leave the dinning chairs alone it's a nice sleek clean look, just add a nice heavy piece to the center for "weight".
Or just get rid of the sectional and get a long sofa and 2 love seats to flank it. Get some splashes of color in there even if it's one. Use it for the drapes valance and a couple of throw pillows. Make sure the rug you'll replace is a complentary color or same just a different shade. Def don't like the rug... too small a print for the scale of the furniture. go plain or large geo shapes. (stripes would be nice in the drapes) but wide 2 or 3" not small.

Chair looks good. Not sure I like its position but it goes with the room. If you could change the pillows with others that have more color that will help a lot. And if you can change the drapes to tie with the color of the pillows even better. But drapes can get expensive, an alternative is to add some color to them with some very simple DIY projects you can find online.

you have a nice leather chair there, move it where it works leaving it alone. color and style is wrong for the sectional. The sectional works in the room, gives lots of seating, splash it up with a few throw pillows, search the thrift stores,Craigs list for another chair or 2 matching would be even better.

Mirrored buffet is GORGEOUS!! Keep it in the formal dining room (in the wall niche). I also think that the leather on the ottoman "fights" the leather in the chair you have. I would move the lovely chair to another room (perhaps an office) as someone suggested. I also like the suggestion someone made of putting the blue color from the pillows onto the walls (since hubby has banned you from buying more pillows)... The room needs some color and that seems to be a good solution. I know I'm in the minority here, but I'm not a big fan of the shutters -- they seem to make the room look more dated. Perhaps, it is because of those particular drapes. I would remove one or the other. Just my two cents worth....You have some lovely pieces and you are doing a GREAT job so far. Keep up the good work! Also that formal dining room and living room are GORGEOUS! Fantastic job there!

I like the idea of no drapes, take them down and live with the shutters for a bit. Also the living room is blah, paint the walls, maybe in the bluish color of the beach house photos and remember there are great throws you can add for a warm touch, I love using good quality throws. Do that and then lets see how it looks.

The chair is currently in an awkward position. The one piece makes the area look cluttered.
I do agree with some others that it is a lot of beige, try to bring in colour with cushions and artwork...
I would also recommend moving your area rug out diagonally towards where the chair is now. The rug is making a boundary of the space only where the couch is, and everything else looks out of place. Just a foot or so.
The dining chairs do look stark so close to the living space - It would be wise to bring some white into pillows and artwork in the living area so that there isn't so much of a contrast.

Recover it in a fabric with a print and color. You have no color in this room. Add life to room with brighter pillows mix it up with pattern and colors. Change window covers to a accent color. A Greek key design would work. Wall color boring too.

Add a round area rug large under table. Maybe a zebra, and add area rug to living room 8x10 in a print. Put something tall on dining table. Color is your friend.

Ck pier one for dining chairs. Go a color. I like the table. To recover furn is expensive. I would just buy a chair, in a color fabric. TJMax is great for pillows and all accessories, and chairs. No need to spend a lot. Like style Z Galleries. But, if done keep them maybe add a brighter color to mix.

Love the mirrored chest. It's ok to mix furn. Try it. The one you have looks too small.

Why did you put drapes that don't go to floor? Just look wrong. Lower rod does not need to go to ceiling.

Check Z Galleries for big art over sofa. Hang 7" from top of back. Go color. That will help your room a lot. Fill most of that wall. 5 ft by 5 ft.
