Not many leaves on my maple trees

I paid a bunch of money to get two big maple trees put in my yard 1.5 years ago. They have been great until this spring. Both trees are less than 50% covered in leaves and no buds visible like more leaves are coming. Our cheap builder installed maple in the front yard is full of leaves, but our big, nursery installed trees are not doing well. Any advice on what may be wrong with these trees?

You should check with the nursery you bought the trees from and get their opinion. They probably have some sort of warranty on what they plant if you have followed the directions that they suggested on care of the tree.

It would be helpful to know your general area and what kind of maple, looks to be a red of some sort, maybe a grafted variety? My thoughts are was the tree fertilized late in the summer? Was the lawn fertilized in the fall? The reason I ask is because fertilizer too late in the season can cause the tree not to harden off. The result is winter kill. The tree is trying to recover but there is damage done.
