Thanks Martin, what I was thinking is that if you root prun fig in container then you should top prun too right ? And if your fig is in container and it is standing on the ground let's say two inches deep, it will root in the soil that the fig tree is standing on right ? So in the fall if you need to overwinter in the garage that fig tree you would have to cut the roots that grew out of the container right? What I want to know is. ( Is that considered root pruned ? And do I need to top prun? )
Yes you will still need to root prune every couple of years as the roots that are growing in pot itself will circle and start to tighten not a good thing.
Also you need to trim canopy yes to balance or else one risk of plant dropping most its figs and stressing plant due to smaller root system not being able to support the topside properly.
Years back i root pruned many figs plants and forgot to do the canopy on one of them and that season it started dropping figs.
I do it all the time. What i do is when fall comes around, i cut off all the roots outside the pot. I mulch heavy late spring and built-up mulch higher towards the south-side of the container( summer heat). During late winter or early spring i lay the container on its side and root- prune a couple of inches of the bottom and replace your new mix on the bottom. Every 4 years they get a complete overhaul.
