I agree. I am even more specific, on this occasion. PARTICULARLY and conspicuously when it comes to H.cybister, there is in my opinion no superior partner for crossbreeding projects than H.papilio. Interestingly, both species Hippeastrums are, within the genus (Hippeastrum) classified as particularly-related to each other, within the Subgenus "Omphalissa" - to which a few other hippeastrums, like H.aulicum and H.calyptratum belong, all of them conspicuously attractive. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omphalissa

I like all of them, but most especially the first and middle ones. And my absolute favorite is the brother of the second one! Stunning! Such beauties I could only hope to have some as gorgeous one day. I'm just getting started again, so I'm trying to start economically from seed. You're giving me something to aim for one day! :)

The first two are really special and i would love to try to breed using papilio. Unfortunately, papilio has always failed to flower when I have planted bulbs. Here in Hong Kong the humidity and heat can be quite high and I wonder if it is the climate they don't like.

Perhaps someone in your region who does grow papilios could send you some pollen and you could store it in the freezer. This works for me as I am currently using frozen pollen from last year's papilios, most of us do this. The unfortunate thing is that these lovely gems bloom so sporadically, sometimes with two years in between with no flowers, and the fact that they typically produce only 2 flowers, most of us have to keep and hoard the precious pollen we are lucky enough to get. But, perhaps you can find someone who has many bulbs...just a thought.

Many of us buy a new bulb each year just for the pollen. I don't know if Royal Colors posts to your area but they usually do sell them. Do you have air-condition in your house, as they will grow year round inside where they don't get to hot.

Hello Hippiezep ! Thanks for your rating )) yes Papillio is pretty cranky, I had to buy it several times to use in breeding. I store its pollen in the freezer)) But it's strange that in your climate it is unstable, it seems that high humidity is ideal for growing it as an epiphyte for example on blocks, you do not need to create additional conditions. Try growing papilios from seeds so that they will adapt to your growing conditions. The "ready to bloom" papilio bulbs that are available have mostly been grown in commercial greenhouses with controlled feeding, light, temperature and humidity.

Elena, I am LOVING the cross with Papilio's green and burgundy colors with the narrowing of the petals offered by Chico. I like the undulations of the petals as well.

The first seedling is a "Jaguar" look-a-like and valuble only if it can produce more than 4 florets per scape.

The second seedling, now that is spectacular. Thank you for sharing your accomplishment. My Suggestion is, !!!IF!!! you have some spare place then self(!)-pollinate it - do NOT crosspollinate! - and provide one balcony box for the seedlings - one box of 50 cm in length provides the place for 150 seeds and, eventually, after replanting, for 10 to 16 of the best seedlings of this batch, to bloom in order to see if you can achieve any further progress. Do you know the parents of this seedling? Do you have any siblings of this seedling? Other than that, kindest regards and very best wishes, from GERMANY to RUSSIA.

First seedling parents are Pappilio X Sybister Rose , it have four flowers.

Parents of the second seedling are also known to me:

a Christmas gift X Pasadena like red seedlings In my first message.

The inheritance of signs goes by a large number and a great variety is obtained.

The second seedling has a similar brother, soon it will bloom again and there will be an opportunity to cross similar for strengthening signs. In addition, his brother last year (the first flowering) had three flowers.

As I go through this entire thread again, I am still in awe of your first two papilio x Chico seedlings, they are amazing!!

I too think that you second photo above resembles the unobtainable Jaguar, perhaps a close runner up especially if you've got 4 flowers!! I like it and would be happy to have one!! Maybe if all 4 flowers open at the same time, you might post a picture on this thread?

As for this stunning white with this unbelievable picotee, I think you have once again hit the jackpot!! I absolutely love it and I'll bet you can't take you eyes off of it, I know I can't!! It is truly spectacular. With some luck next year it will produce 4 flowers for you!

For someone living in a cold climate (I'm cold enough that I only have 4 months where they can go outside) you are doing extremely well, getting these to bloom for you!! Do you have a greenhouse? This is my problem, I have too many mid sized seedlings around here and only once in a blue moon will one bloom for me!!

Thank you, Donna! I will definitely post here a photo when all 4 flowers open. I unfortunately do not have a greenhouse and have to spend the wintering seedlings in the cold basement.( +2C ) But there is a small room where I keep the smallest seedling and where in the spring I put (right to the floor) waking seedlings. And then I wear them on the courtyard )) that's how I runing whis with them all year round)). I want at least an unheated greenhouse)) we have a very long winter. All been growing for a very long time.

Thank you Elena!! This is very lovely indeed!! A little different than Jaguar but a lovely color and shape and a wonderful substitute for Jaguar and I know I for one, would order 2 of these if these were on RC's list!!

Thank you very much for all the feedback and links. I looked at the Jaguar photo and the differences are certainly obvious, but Papillio blood gives and many similarities to both of them.

Donna, I have some interesting seedlings, but there is a problem with their reproduction .... I know how to do this but .... This is my trouble! If in the process of culling I'm already quite cold about mediocre seedlings, (I send them to the compost pile) then cut something more good .... don't can.....I'm afraid of losing them, and waiting for them offsets.

Hans, Yes, you correctly understood)) it is this seedling that is self-pollinated and the boxes inspire confidence))) but with a place to accommodate already trouble! Soon I have nowhere to put them!

A few more seedlings will be flowered the other day, the summer heat helped them to decide on flowering))) let's see what this time .....

As regards JL's question: Once you have started growing from seed and repeat this annually - you will obtain first bloom of seedlings (maiden bloom) after 3 years annually too, and there is some overlap since there is many seedlings which will take 4 Seasons for attaining bloomable size. On the other hand, it IS possible to obtain maiden bloom after 2 Seasons, if you use artificial assimilation lights such as good fluorescents with highly efficient reflectors.

Elena, you gain experience and success, it's nice. I wish you recognition in your homeland also, if it has not already happened. From ...... do not wait for special recognition, she loves only her "children")).

Hans, thank you once again, yes, of course I have to wait every time, large seedlings sleep in winter and only in the spring I can see what I did once or repeat the flowering of last year's seedlings. Some of the flowers bloom in summer, but winter makes its own corrections))
