FOCAL WALL IDEAS?

Looking for inspiration for this wall. We will have a really long credenza on the floor but need to do something bold and inspiring above it. Other than painting it a contrast color (thinking of a teal shade) or even wallpaper, what are some decor ideas? Staggered floating shelves? Cubicles? Just art? A challenge is the soffet above which holds hvac ducts. If painted contrasting color, where does paint stop on top and top left?

Thanks much!

I would go with built in shelves to offset the HVAC ducts.

There will be a long buffet below - would that not be a bit much?

When I look at your open floor plan, I notice there are many little things going on. I am suggesting you edit and streamline your design.

To that end, keep the treatment of your accent wall simple. A large painting will suffice. Have you considered a chandelier over your dining table to define this eating area and offer an additional focal point. OR a large important floor lamp off to the side of your long buffet.

Your sofa is blue, correct? So a teal wall needs to coordinate perfectly or the blues will not work together.

I can't tell from my monitor if this color will work with your sofa color but check out Blue Echo Affinity collection from Benjamin Moore.

Lastly, your accent color wall would end under the soffit and continue along the curve to the left to that natural break in the corner. The strong horizontal of the HVAC box will look cool as an architectural element.

    Best.

Hard to say without knowing the length or height or style of the credenza, but I most likely one large piece of art would be best. You don't need to fill the wall.

You can try the designer trick by placing 3 or 5 art pieces or paintings across the span of the buffet. If you scale them properly, it will be a fantastic focal point!

A large glossy horizontal print would look beautiful there. I can also see a textile woven art hanging. Love your space. Beautiful.

    Visualizemaven, the sofa is grey.

I think repeating the gallery wall on this wall is just repeating what is going on in the living area to the right - so go for one simple focal point here: a large painting or cool wallpaper.

Gray sofa? It looks so blue on my monitor..........

Do you like the color Blue Echo?

Just really not a fan of the concept of a "focal wall". To me that feels very dated. The room should be cohesive, comprehensive, why would one wall stand out, that makes no sense to me. Another reason to not focus on that wall is that soffit, that's the last thing you want to draw attention to. Go ahead and put your buffet piece there, hang your art work over it (no more little pieces like in the room adjoining, hang one or two large pieces). And then focus on decluttering and cleaning up the spaces .. you have way too many little random things going on.

I agree, I would not paint the wall and end under the HVAC duct, that will emphasize the duct. I meant shelves top to bottom, no buffet. Buffet will work too, with a few painting under, or big one + a few art items on the buffet.

A large piece of Art can really bring in a wave of deftness and add more color and life to your room. It acts as a style to your room.

Here's the opposite wall which I didn't post. We will be doing something with the TV recess and I will do a painting for above fireplace (excuse the art sitting up there temporarily).

I do have some huge canvasses so could easily do something for the subject wall

So, as is the case on HOUZZ, you now have different ideas about whether or not to accentuate that wall.

I still say that making that wall a focal point is a good thing because the dining area is not well defined and needs to be. Also, I find the sofit of architectural interest, especially with those curve, so having it accentuated is not necessarily a bad thing here.

Consider this: if you keep the mirror gallery arrangement in the adjacent room, then one large mirror over the FP would work. You would then hang your original large painting in the dining alcove.

I paint also so I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

I hope you will consider the feedback that there are too many little things going on throughout the entire living area which is confusing to the eye.

As when composing a painting, we are aware of creating a cohesive statement within the confines of our canvas. The same could be said about our living spaces.

    Best.

Thanks much! I agree that there are too many little things going on which is probably what prompted me to ask for advice here.

I found this wall idea that I personally feel matches the energy of your room....a very nice cozy comfortable feel. Very welcoming.....I like the art on the wall because it is easy to choose from your existing photos an can be changed out as your family grows and you visit other places. A vivid color with pillows, rugs vases, and flowers spilled around the room would allow everything to relate....I vote for more lime and blue pillows and a lime green wall! But again just something that I thought would 'work' in your room and be unique to your family and style.
