New arborvitae browning already!

Hi!

We planted 8ft arborvitae 10 days ago and the top
2-5 inches of most of the trees are browning. The browning is mostly limited to
the tips except for a couple of small spots which formed prior to planting. The
original hole was full of construction debris, so the nursery recommended a
combo of top soil and soil conditioner. (The pile of gravel and rocks are still next to the trees.) The first week after planting it rained
for several days and we've watered once with a soaker hose. The browning really
appeared after 5-6 days.

Is it shock, windburn or am I going to kill them?

If you are saying that your nursery recommended replacing the soil in the backfill for your trees, they may not be familiar with the science behind planting trees and are probably not a good source for information. Removal of construction debris would have been a good idea, but replacement of the soil is not. It's hard to know for sure what is happening with your trees. Read section 12 of the linked article for proper watering. That would be my first guess as to what might be the problem. You may also want to read section 7 for future plantings.
