Palm tree stumps/logs

One man's trash is another man's treasure! This past weekend, one of my neighbors cut down two palm trees in his front yard. I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time as he was juuuuust about to take a truckload of these trunk sections to his "other house" and throw them in the woods...

I love them for lifting extra-full bowls of bromeliads where they can be better viewed. Also good for trailing/vining plants so they have room to hang and not be on the ground.

I got three very nice sections from him. Now I wish I had taken even more. His wife kept the best one - can't blame her - the "foot". But she didn't want the rest of them. (I guess she can always go into the woods in the back of her other house and get them.)

if you WANT them to last...not so much.

if you WANT the stump to rot it takes forever!

They rot pretty fast in my experience especially if you water them when you water the planters on top.

Agreed - they will rot out completely in less than a year.

Wow, really? I didn't expect them to last forever but I was hoping for maybe five years. LOL on me! Thanks for the heads-up!

Thinking about placing clear plastic drip trays upside-down over the trunk tops and then putting my plants on top of those. Do you think that would help?

Sealing them with thompson water seal might help

Nothing is going to stop them from rotting unless you bring them in the house and keep them dry.

LOL, Ricky. Do I need to tuck them into my bed, too? You remind me of some of the funny things you used to write about your BBQ plant swaps. They were hilarious - I would have tears running down my face - I need to see if I can find some of those.

Pea, I just might try that because I have some Thompsons sitting around. Good idea!

Since I had some completely-flat, clear plastic trays (I think they were the tops to cheesecake trays), I already flipped them over and on top. Not bad for the short-term.

I had some extra-large terra cotta saucers (the kind that go under clay pots to catch the water). I turned them upside down over the stumps and set my plants on top of those and they fit perfectly! They won't hold in moisture like plastic would, and they will keep water and debris from being right on the surface and entering the stump. May help them last a tad longer.

I have 2 not just stumps but trunks of oak trees in my yard that i keep telling to rot. One tree was dying and my neices hubby said he'd cut it down if he could have it for fire wood...well he got it down, cut all the limbs for fire wood but left the trunk cause his saw wasn't big enough. If i had known he was gonna leave the trunk in the i might found someone else that would have took it all but no one wants just the trunk...and i asked high and low...wood carvers and wood turners but no one wanted it so it is smack in the middle of my back yard rotting...it is to a point i can take a shovel and hit it with the point and i can break some off now and again. The other oak died in back behind the garage and a storm knocked it over...just missing the roof.
