Hi Peter, welcome to the forum. I am from Perth WA. I only started growing Adeniums this year, and I love these plants. Im happy I found this forum to learn about Desert Roses.

thanks shang & Agartta. Agartta i have bought heaps of seed from WA adeniums the seeds he sells seem to produce larger than normal pinks i have purchased around 100 seeds of him over half have flowered all pink have you ever had any dealings with him another friend has had a similar result.

Welcome, Peter. You are in a wonderful country to grow these wonderful plants. Sandy & Cheryl, both from Australia where and are so much help to myself over the years.

I think you will find with Seed from either Adenium_ko or Rinoa (Orient Adenium), you will get better chances of a similar bloom for form and color.

Many of the seed sellers do no hybridize their own seeds and the market. The seed coming from the above mentioned are proving to produce some marvelous blooms and percentages alot higher with years of growing.

It was the norm years ago, to just get Pinks.

thanks rick i have been using Rinoa the last 6mths i have had very good germination from her seeds i wont know till next summer if the colours are true to pictures.i will have a go at up loading some picks later. i have lots of pinks at the moment because of the last seed suppler i am not happy with him not one has flowered true to pictures on his sight suppose on the other hand i have got lots of root stock for grafting if i have to get some positives out of it.

Hi Peter, which guy from WA u bough seeds from. My main supplier is WA Adenium seeds Importers. They I think import from King Adenium. Most of their seeds germinated. Got Arabicum and Soco. There is another good supplier of seeds in WA on Ebay - Caegus, his seeds are good but less germination rate. I also bought 2 grafted plants from Rare Imports in Wa, they post Aus wide. Great website rareimports.com.au.

I just received 2 types of Adeniums seeds from Mr KO Ebay. They germinated the fastest seeds so far. I also bought seeds from, King Adenium who gave 10'extra seeds, AdeniumCenter and, SiamAdenium

Not sure of the colour of seedlings as my oldest ones are 4 months old. I will update once I have flowers. I like pinks as well.

Hi Peter, glad to see you started a new thread where everyone can welcome you properly. My husband and I have been growing desert roses for just over 15yrs now. As Rick said above... Mr Ko and Rinoa are trusted suppliers of Adenium seed. I have some beautiful double/triple flowers from Mr Ko's seed. I have not personally grown seed from Rinoa yet, but I do know of other Aussies that get similar good results from hers as well. I will be getting some seed from Rinoa soon. (Please also realise that desert roses do not necessarily grow true from seed.) We find that we get some similarities to mother plant and also other patterns & colours from the same seed. Some doubles/triples & some singles. We have been very happy with the variety that we get. You can also look up www.sandysadeniums.com in Cairns - she sells grafted plants. Welcome again to the forum. :)

That is awesome Peter. Lots of cute seedlings. What soil are you using to start seeds?

Agartta succulent mix with fine coconut coir and fine perlite mixed through it is something i put together through trial and error a couple of years ago i spray them with water nightly i have them in a small grow tent to germinate them the trays are from bunnings they are trough trays found in the indoor pot section i put one tray upon the other i drill holes in the top tray for excess water to drain through i never have mold or rotting seeds the larger plants have a different mix.

Peter, your seedlings look great, it looks like you've got your soil mix working well for you. A grow tent is a great idea to use in Winter in Newcastle.

I think you will get some lovely new flowers from Rinoa's seed. I know that Sandy/sandysadeniums has also used Rinoa's seed for some of her beauties. I have just purchased 2 pkts of seed from Rinoa of varieties that I didn't want to miss out on this season. May have to wait till Spring to propagate them. (I do not use a grow tent.) I also have about 60 baby/seedlings growing at the moment. These are from my seed pods. I have them in the sun all day & then move them indoors at night to keep them warmer. Good luck with your babies. Would love to see photos of them when they are old enough to flower. :)

thanks every one i have gota get them moving i am waiting on another seed comming another lot from Rinoa couple of colours & minis & some from Comsan Kan 20x Bangwang seeds & 20x khz DHA seeds i have got to get my collection up again i lost interest with desert roses about 6 years ago after a big storm lasted about about a week it wrecked some of my plants & root rot got about 5 of them back then there was no support so i bind the plants if this great forum was around i could had a chance withe the help of fello addicts on this forum the storm was so strong a large ship the pasha bulker was washed up on newcastle beach it was bad

Peter, with the seedlings you have growing from Rinoa's seed - is there any chance you could show us photos of what varieties you bought - that you now have growing??? Or maybe you could list the names of the varieties, so we could see??? :)

Ok Rachel i don't label my plants with a name i number them.It saves writing the same name over & over each variety is allocated a number the number is put on the row of seeds when potting they get a label with with a number and sown date so i can refer back to my book in the pic from the left is the number allocated, name of seeds how many seed purchase, and how many germinated. I have about 50 plants which i dont know what they are i had the info on a piece of paper i put it in my pocket i forgot about it it got washed them seeds came from wa adeniums all them so far have been pink i hope i have explained it to you ok peter

Omg Peter, that's a lot of seeds. Yes I understand your labelling system. Thanks for listing them so we could see. Looks like you have some very nice ones there. Good luck with your growing. I think you'll have better luck with new flowers from Rinoa's seed.... I'll bet you can't wait to see them flower when they're big enough.

not wrong last years seed were very disappointing.I am waiting for colleen in the NT to email me picks of what she has as they flower she has very nice plants and her prices are very good also really good person to deal with.

Hello Rachel....(and others).... I am in the south western suburbs of Brisbane have DR seedlings 4-5 cm tall - should I stop watering, I have been reading all the good advice on the forum ..I have been putting them under my deck at night - is that enough to protect them during these cold nights ..

Hi Sandra, No - don't stop watering baby seedlings. These babies will need water through Autumn/Winter. Just try to water first thing in the morning and I use a mist spray setting on my hose, so that they are not drenched. Let them dry out a little in between waterings.

I also bring my babies inside the house at night to keep them warmer. I would suggest if you could, that you do the same. Just find some space in a bathroom, or internal laundry or somewhere inside out of the cold. Your babies will start to struggle outside at night, once Winter starts to hit and depending on where you are located - some parts of Brisbane get very cold mornings in Winter. (Eg: Ipswich)..... All desert roses hate cold and wet conditions....Don't forget to put them back outside in the sun in the morning...

Welcome, Peter! Glad to have you join us. Ooh, you got some good seeds from Rinoa. Yum, Joy Rich. I liked that one so much I purchased a grafted plant and look forward to using it in my own hybridizing. I got a few seeds from her as well and my seedlings are going on 9 months but were over wintered for a good part of that. So I haven't seen any of them bloom yet. Good luck!

Thanks patty we are just heading into winter. I am looking forward to the seedlings to go off from Rinoa i have heard that she has a good hit rate for colour not like my last suppler he is a dud all i have been getting is pink pink pink pink around 70 to 80 pink mmmmm frustrated only good for root stock (:peter:)

Hi Rachel, sorry I haven,t been able to answer and participate in forum. I have had bronchitis and a broken ankle, so have been feeling sorry for myself and very anti-social, but on the mend now. I bought a greenhouse and leave the little plants in there at night, it is quite warm, and I zip it up each night to ensure no cold winds etc. they seem to be doing OK, but have a little yellow bug on them these last few day. Should I spray with Mavrick or Confidor. Thank you for help

Hi if you want it warmer in the green house in a fish box mix up some potting mix with a bag of cow manure the decomposition heats the green house up and you can use the potting mix later my grandfather use to do it in his green house i did it in my green house till it blew away

Hi Sandra (Brisbane), sounds like you have aphids. Don't worry, aphids are not that bad. If the aphids are on your babies, I would Not spray them with anything, as they may not tolerate chemicals at this size (age). There is another way to deal with them.

Normally I would just tell you to spray them with your garden house while rubbing them off with your fingers, which works pretty well - but because it is Winter you don't want your babies saturated. You can simply rub them off while squishing them between your fingers, making sure you look underneath the leaves for where more are probably hiding. Please do this gently so as not to damage your leaves. Your fingers will turn yellow from the aphids but it washes off easily. You could use a bowl of water next to you to dip your fingers in to help wash them off. Try and get them all off and you will need to check your babies every day for a week and squish anymore that you see. It may be tedious doing it this way, but it does work. This is the safest way to eliminate them.

Aphids are sap sucking insects that love to feed on the new growth, so are attracted to the new leaves. Of all the pests that may bother your plants, these are the lesser problem ones, in my opinion. You will need to keep an eye on your plants for any new aphids till Spring. I do not freak out if I find aphids as I have always been able to eliminate them this way. Be aware that ants can be responsible for bringing these pests into your pots. Pots on the ground are more likely to be affected. I hope this helps, and I hope you're feeling better. :)
