I'm clueless..

I have no idea how to decorate my new home. I live in an apartment and for the first time I have a small amount of money to be able to decorate my home. I have just moved and I have no idea what to do or how to do it. I've looked everywhere and just end up leaving the store because I am so overwhelmed by the vast amount of choices. I want to love my bedroom and have a warm and welcoming living room. I'd like a minimalist look with no clutter. I have a limited budget but enough to purchase a new piece of furniture for the living room and decor for the walls and bedroom. I'd love for my bathroom to be bright and cheery.I have no storage in the bathroom, not even a medicine cabinet.

I can't decide if I should go with a dresser in my bedroom or setup a closet system.

As I said my budget is limited to a couple thousand dollars but it seems as if that's enough if I shop wisely. I would appreciate any help you have. Sorry for the mess..

Ok, I'll give you a starting place. You need a large poster for over the dining table, and another one (or set of prints) for over the headboard. Go dig around at some local poster store the accent color(s) most present in your living space and bedding respectively -- you could even look at Ikea. Get those done, then allow yourself more time to unpack and settle in before taking on anything else. (Or, if you go to Ikea, peer at what they offer for TV consoles, which offer additional storage for components and other life stuff.)

Also, you don't have zero bathroom storage, just a minimalist vanity -- you have to make every inch of it work. Put spice-racks (the $3 Rubbermaid kind) on the backs of each door for your everyday items, and some organizer racks under there for the rest. You can make it work.

Are you the owner or the renter? If you are the owner, you can install a surface mount or recessed medicine cabinet to the left of your bathroom mirror. If you are a renter, ask your landlord for permission to install a surface mount medicine cabinet.

As for colors, it looks like you have several Tiffany turquoise blue things. Look for artwork you really love that includes that color. Sidewalk sales of art are usually inexpensive. There may be some scheduled in your area over the holiday weekend coming up.

Wow! Thanks everyone! I was thinking a large floor length mirror in the entryway. I was wondering if I should stick with the cherry color that most of my wood is or maybe mix in a little glass or shabby chic white? Furniture. I'm planning on getting rid of the purple chair. I need some furniture in the living room and I can't decide whether or not to do an overstuffed chair or a love seat. Any suggestions on colors? I was also wondering about an area rug in the living room. What do you guys think about mounting the TV? I would like to at the buffet behind the kitchen table with perhaps a runner. As far as Ikea I usually leave their in tears. It is so overwhelming for me. I love the idea of the pictures over the bed. Again do I mount the TV? I want my bedroom to be a sanctuary. Yes I watched far too much Oprah. Do I put a medicine cabinet type thing in the bathroom? There's room for it on the side wall next to the door. I also need furniture for the bedroom such as side tables. I've looked on places like offer up and let go but I can't seem to get answers from people. Plus I don't understand how people use an item for 5 years and then want to sell it for the same price they bought it for LOL. You guys are so awesome thank you so much for all your help. I'm very interested in color schemes. I do rent. I have no problem adding color and painting over it when I move. I don't like the painting over the fireplace. The one thing I have to keep is the large brown leather couch. How do you place the furniture?

I feel like I need end tables in the living room as well as a coffee table. I didn't know again if I should stick with the cherry color or change it up with glass or white/cream... then there are things like overstuffed pillows and throw blankets I didn't mean there's so much to think about. This is the first time in my life I've had enough money to purchase these things Ada deal of course. I'm sorry if I'm asking too many questions I know so many of you have this talent and I just don't. This is a fresh start for me and I feel like I want to change everything. Color scheme suggestions? I also have no Lighting in the bedroom and I was thinking of adding some sort of Tiffany Lighting in the living room. I can't thank you enough!

What do u guys think of these recliners? I don't particularly care for them but my boyfriend wants one...

This one comes in grey, cream, turquoise

Here's a plan: do one room at a time. Don't do Ikea if the store drives you crazy, as it does so many of us.

First, add a surface mounted medicine cabinet in the bathroom. $100.

Second, buy two matching nightstands for the bedroom. $100. Look at the Sauder line. You can get two for under $100 from amazon.com. https://www.amazon.com/Sauder-Beginnings-Night-Cinnamon-Cherry/dp/B00FLZE4EW

Third, buy a dresser for your bedroom that will serve two people. $300. Again, look at Sauder. https://www.amazon.com/Sauder-Shoal-Dresser-Jamocha-Finish/dp/B0042JVEVY

Fourth, arrange the furniture in your living room. Decide if you really want recliners or if you want something less comfortable and more formal. Once you buy a recliner, you will never get its owner to give it up. Get two if you both want to be happy. They need to face the tv.

Those are awesome ideas!! What about decor? Like artwork and lighting? Even throw pillows throw me off... Would u do a coffe table? What about an area rug? I'm sorry to keep asking so many questions but you have so many good ideas. And it really helps to have some input. You're very generous do you spend your time and energy helping me I can't tell you how much I appreciate it! I really don't want a recliner I think they're ugly! But my boyfriend really wants one so I'm trying to find one that I like or can stand lol

Amazon is great! Especially cuz I'm a Prime member. I really like the idea of buying things from places where I don't have to pay shipping or tax. In my area tax is 10%

I could probably pay someone a small stipend to help me...

Apple pie gave great advice..... so- take it! Then, take a deep breath, relax and get out a notebook and start making a plan. I think you are stressing yourself out by thinking that you have to do everything a once!

I have found that if you start with the room that you use the most or an area that affects your daily routine t to be a good strategy when feeling overwhelmed. For me, that would be the bathroom or the kitchen. In your case I would suggest the bathroom. (1) because it is small,in good shape with minimal inexpensive changes (mostly storage) needed to make it work for you (2) once completed it will give you a positive sense of accomplishment to tackle the next on your list.

    Here's a few suggestions to get inspired;

mramsey has given you GREAT tips for bathroom storage. Especially that first link. I am stealing several of those!

Regarding the recliner, I like the first one but your boyfriend will have to sit in them and try them out. He needs to be sure it's comfy. They are very different styles.

For lighting, only the dining room and kitchen need overhead lighting. For other rooms in the house, people and rooms look best with a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height.

Regarding style, put (one at a time) several different styles in the top search box to see which one you like. When you see something you like, write down the item or style. I understand your frustration! I like the eclectic look, so that's a lot of different styles as well. Here are some styles to check out: traditional, transitional, modern, contemporary, eclectic. Develop a wish list and set up a budget. Measure twice, buy once!

Save some counter space in the bathroom by putting the roll of toilet paper on the toilet paper holder. It's a start.

Others have given good ideas. Good luck!

We all know how you feel wanting to do everything at once but....don't! You will end up making mistakes (personal experience) and regretting it. Listen to your mothers. Start organizing your bathroom and create some idea books of rooms you like on Houzz. We can start moving furniture around tomorrow if you put your nose to the grindstone!

Get busy and clean up. Furniture and art won't change your housekeeping habits.

hi. the first step needed, is a clean up job. clear ALL surfaces. then look through the things you've cleared off and chose the bare minimum that needs to be visible (eg. bathroom, a bunch of toothbrushes and a soap dispenser on the unit, toilet roll on the holder, shampoo on the shelf and a towel. *everything* else: always in the vanity)
the living room, pack away the throw/ garment, clear up the items on the floor.
once you have the space cleared of everything non functional and non decorative, you can work on a layout. once you have defined areas, you can work on decor

get a desk with storage for all paperwork and stationery to disappear in to. a frame or small ornament can be displayed there.
create some definite layout of the furniture, just move them around until it feels right. One option is seating facing the tv and fireplace, back facing the dining area. (even if you're looking to change furniture, you can use the pieces you have currently to get a layout, and then swop them for new furniture)
Get a lower tv unit, again, with storage.
you can move the dining set further to the corner, and the work desk closer to it, defining the living area

once you've arranged it all, look at rug and art options, etc

"I'd like a minimalist look with no clutter".....????? Time to get to work on that before buying anything. It's actually free if you just spend 30 minutes.

opps. Jennafer, we didn't mean to make you mad. Come on we're trying to help. Just pick up and shove everything in your closet. We'll never know the difference and then you can "decorate". Did you order a cabinet for your bathroom off Amazon?

Buy a closet organiser for both sides..you will love them and they are cheap ( not melamine , get the wire ones )
Saves a dresser purchase then as they come with shelves and you can store your jumpers / jeans / shoes on them for now and hang everything else

Buy a dresser later if you need more storage. You might just need some drawers rather than a big dresser.

You just need a drill to drill them into the walls. Take out your rail you have in there now. You won't be needing it

Because your home is an apartment, you are limited to non-structural changes to solve the storage problem. For your bathroom, you should look for a storage solution for your stuff: a basket or attractive lucite box which could fit below your vanity, or an IKEA rolling cart (about 31"high, with three 17"x12" bins to hold your bathroom products) if there is a spot for it in your bathroom or bedroom. You may find a storage cube ottoman (the top lifts) useful for your office stuff (doubles as seating or a mini-table if you put a small tray on it). A low storage chest used as a tv platform can double as storage for paperwork, folded clothing, kitchen gadgets. To make your apartment more "you", add framed art hung on heavy-duty removable hooks such as "Command" hooks. You may be permitted to use small nails if you fill them when you move, but that would be my second choice. Shop at HomeGoods, used furniture shops, and discount stores to keep costs down. I like to have a colorful rug in the kitchen. Go slowly and buy wisely.
