Beautiful! What a lot of buds and blooms! I bought GC as a little and I mean little body bag at Home Depot this year. Smallest bareroot I have ever seen. Really surprised at how much it is growing and has tiny little buds developing. Looking forward to finding out about the fragrance. I also have LOS but it doesn't have that much fragrance tho' I do like the blooms and shape of the bush.

Thanks for all the kind words. I love this GC. It was my first Austin. The fragrance is outstanding and it absolutely loves this container and location. It gets tons of direct sunlight all the way up till about 2 or 3pm. However, here in SF, it's a rust magnet, but Serenade Spray has been helping significantly this year (highly recommend). LOS, Desdemona, and Teasing Georgia no rust (yet, knock on wood) in pretty much the same locations (strange huh).

Thanks @rabainsz7bnw ! Its a 18" pot (if I measured it correctly inside-to-inside). I think it should have been at least one size bigger. He seems to be doing well enough though, but the graft knot is a bit too high (2-3" above soil). It's just a cheapie plastic one, come winter, I'm going to get a nicer, bigger, fancier, prettier home for him.

I wish I can grow such a nice rose as yours in a pot. What kind of potting medium did you use for this rose?

Hi @KarenPA_6b - I use E.B. Stone's "Rose Grow Planting Mix" soil. It works wonderfully for the roses. I fertilize about every 6 weeks with either Dr Earth's Organic Rose & Flower and/or this year I'm using David Austin's Rose Food. Both work very well.

For that Golden Celebration, yes...it wants water nearly every day (it may be due to the smaller pot). I may skip a day here and there (especially on colder days in SF), but when in full bloom, he is very thirsty.

Some of my newer ones I planted in larger pots, they can get by with every other day or a bit longer. A good soaking every 2-3 days

The scent on my Golden Celebration is intoxicating. My husband and I both love it. That is one of the reasons I chose to buy one.

I've added Golden Celebration back to my garden this year. It's own-root and grooooowing. I know he'll black spot here in the forever damp Great Lakes, but c'est la vie!

I love the scent. It's strong, and initially seems very "dry" in my sinuses and I suppose is tea scent, changing to a very sweet and lemony fragrance that makes me think of how lemon-flavoured Pez candies taste, but as a fragrance.

Wow so so nice. Not here yet but recently ordered two Golden Celebrations. One to pot and one to plant in the ground, the potted GC might end up in the ground as well. I can't wait to see how they turn out this summer especially after seeing this.

Your rose looks great. Are you doing root pruning or something to keep it small enough to fit in the pot, or is it satisfied growing that size naturally in the confines of the pot?

So healthy! I had read organic fertilizers dont work well in pots, but maybe your potting mix has the right microbes?

Totoro, I have grown roses in pots organically for over 20 years. I use organic fertilizer for them and they do just fine.

ES - I wish my Golden Celebration had the wonderful golden look that yours does. Yours is beautiful! Mine has always been a rich apricot, which I don’t mind but my garden is a bit heavy on apricot roses at the moment and I would like to see some golden blooms on it. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Darren - Awesome looking GC - However, if your GC has no smell - your missing probably the best part...it's smell is super strong and lemony, fruity, strawberry...it's one of the best smelling roses I've ever had. I've had several GC's at different locations and states...and they've all smelled strong...so perplexed as to what happened to yours...almost tempted to say try with a new one or something...

If it is an apricot color with little to no scent, are you sure it's actually a Golden Celebration and not another Austin that is apricot colored?

Everyone was raving about its scent and I bought it from David Austin’s website with such anticipation to smell it. I can’t believe there’s literally hardly any fragrance whatsoever. That was it’s first ever bloom which was dead headed today in fact. Loads more are about to open. Maybe they’ll be scented? Fingers crossed. :) xx

fragrance: medium strong, slightly tropical fruity, tea rose, kind of like a florist cut rose (not really in a good way) or the opaque way tulips smell. There's a faint peach/apricot/nectarine aspect to it as well, which is more detectable on a humid day.

@Darren Harwood Hi Darren. Did you get fragrance in your GC as it matured? I am thinking of adding it to my DA order so it would really help to know. Thanks.

Unfortunately, at least for me, I have found the fragrance of Golden Celebration only moderately strong, maybe somewhere between "medium" and "strong". The quality of smell is nice but I would not say exceptional, not really better than many other fragrant varieties. I will point out though I'm in a climate with dry summers, when they bloom, so that could be affecting things.

These photos are beautiful! I love that you get such good results in a pot! I have a two year old golden celebration that I tried to use as a climber in a pot but failed haha. I just have a few questions for you:

What zone are you in? Do you do any special pruning to get it to be so full?

How is the bloom frequency for you during the season?

Hi @DLEverette_NC_Zone7b Why thanks!! Yes, my DA's love the pots. I live in San Francisco (don't know the zone), and I prune all the way back every year. The only thing I use now is some granular fungicide (have to with the fog - rust is a constant) and I fertilize about twice a year with David Austin fertilizer granules.

Golden Celebration blooms in cycles or flushes. Basically big bloom, rest, big bloom rest.. Not sure how many but maybe ~4-5 or so a season..

Wow 4-5 flushes? I'd love to have that many! San Francisco is zone 10, which is 3 zones warmer than me here in zone 7. That's actually a good thing because yours will probably want to be taller than normal, which is what happens here.

When you winter prune all the way back, how far back do you go? I did 6in this year. Is that too much? (photo attached)

Hi @DLEverette_NC_Zone7b no worries on the questions, on pruning... on the shrubs, I de-leaf/deadhead, and cut back by about two thirds.

I don't prune back nearly as much as you do, but in SF, we also do not get below 40 degrees, so no freezing here.
