Laundry room is about 100 square feet in including entrance hall; large window. The counter would top the W/D, full size, and a new cream (Wolf) cabinet for stainless Kohler sink and faucet; existing 42" cabinets on top, both in same traditional styles -- old ones will be painted to match new one; older cream/taupe/beige tile floor 9" with grout lines. As a cost effective upgrade, (savings of at least $2,000 if porcelain, $1500 if marble left over from foyer project, and even more if we added heat) we elected not to replace the 25 year old ceramic tile floor which is in good condition, safe because of the frequent grout lines, and is in the same light marble tones used in the rest of the house (foyer, master bath). Blue pearl and dark stained cabinets in adjacent kitchen; limestone with black Kohler fixtures in powder bath on other side -- HOWEVER, keeping the ceramic floor tile this has made it difficult to find a granite that will complement all of these cream to steel neutrals (white W/D) and keep the eye on the granite, not the old floor -- I am about to give up and replace, the floor, too with a marble or porcelain tile. . Santa Cecelia granite was our original choice, but now seems too yellow/gold, and we are considering a Typhoon Persa, Giallo Napolean, and similar stones IF they add enough gray and white as well as taupe and cream -- the sink will take up most of the base cabinet but with the surrounding backsplashes, will have more color impact while in use. We liked Colonial Cream, too,

I will probably add a long rug or one smaller one and one longer run -- if I were to replace the floor I could not use porcelain look alike wood because adjacent hall floor is wood; vinyl surfaced wood products are not practical if the washing machine floods -- happened twice in 25 years. So it would likely be a 12x12, or larger square or 12x24 stone look in porcelain. Same tones as the ceramic ones I have now.

We are also concerned about how to move the washer and dryer for cleaning, repair, and replacement. We purchased some inexpensive moving dollies that raise the height about one inch, making our countertop with granite about 42". The sink will be standard height at 36". Backsplash in granite around the sink, but simple tile backsplash above washer/dryer.

We like some movement in our stones -- a butcher block or wood top would be half the cost but might not last as long. Color and price are most important. In our area labor is expensive -- the countertop replacement will be about $1700-1800 for 22.5 square feet, plus labor for installing cabinet, sink, faucet and building granite countertop supports -- at least another $1000.
