Apple Tree Problem?

Last year I planted 4 apple trees in the back yard. They are all growing fine. I was out there this weekend tending to them and I noticed an odd mark on one of them.

Its along the main trunk of the tree and it looks strange. Its like some of the wood is going away, and structurally looks like a weak spot on the tree now.

Maybe its just normal development but it has me a bit worried... I've posted a pic, I'm wondering if this is a cause for concern, and if so what?

Hard to say for sure but looks like mechanical damage perhaps from rubbing a stake. Is the growth above the damage vigorous ? I would consider cutting that branch off just above the collar.

growth is fine above that. Its hard to tell in this photo, but thats really the main growth of the tree. If I have to cut that I'll loose 1/2+ of the tree. There was never anything physically touching the tree there. I was concerned that there is something wrong with the tree itself not physical.
