Flower turned to powder

My brother says they had Azaleas growing but, he took them out. They laid out pine needles where the Azaleas once were. Then they had yellow flowers growing but then they turned black and powdery, then they turned white.
Is it possible that the Azaleas grew back but the pine needles killed the flowers?
Is it possible that they weren't Azaleas at all, but something else?
