J Maple has white spots on it. What is it?

I think it might just be fertilizer residue. Does it rub off easily?

not exactly - it does take a little force to rub off. I haven't added any fert to the plant though?

It just looks quite new and nurseries often treat new plants with a liquid fertilizer spray application that leaves a white residue. It should rub off rather easily, however.

There is also a cultivar (name I can't recall at the moment) that also has young new growth mottled with white. But the patterning on your tree is a bit too regular for that. Do you know what cultivar that is you have?

It's the Shin Deshojo cultivar. I can't seem to remember the white residue when I received it, but I'll definitely take your word for it. I have 4 container Maples I'm trying to grow and learn with, I think I'll be on this site for quite sometime.
