Yellow leaves - Any ideas

I'm in Los Angeles and most of my plumies were doing just fine, but suddenly some of their leaves started turning yellow and dropping. Any ideas?

Looks like an insect problem too maybe.. I use Bayer 3 in 1 to control insects. As for your fear of overwatering... One thing I have learned is that once they are well rooted, they can handle quite a bit of water. Most issues with rotting occur on newly rooted plants or plants in the rooting process. I had a celadine that I neglected early last year in what was a very rainy spring and the soil literally stayed soaking wet. Never had an issue, and it thrived. BUT, it is well established in it's pot and I may have been lucky. Another thing is that when I pot up, I keep the root "flare" right at the soil line. That keeps the trunk out of the soil and the main woody root area in the "drier" section of the soil. Seems to help.

Too much sun and reflective heat.

Remove leafs, water and shade.

How do I differentiate this from overwatering - I live in constant fear of overwatering them...

You may want to to use a moisture meter... they're cheap and effective.

While you get meter, stick your finger in soil. Dry: needs water. Wet: withhold water til finger test feels "dry"

I agree they are too dry. The Chopstick method also works for determining moisture. Its pretty hard to over water in a sunny climate during the growing season.

Chris may be onto something based upon some of deformed leaves on the right side of the plant. First is more water and then once they have had a few days to recover then you can consider if you still need treatment for insects. The plants may recover enough or spraying water may naturally control or limit any insect issues without treatments.
