We have a purple clematis growing, but a good portion of the leaves are yellowing in color. It has been a cool, somewhat wet spring here in the Eastern part of the U.S. In the background the are evergreens. They are surely taking some moisture from the ground near the clematis. I do not know if they are getting too much moisture or not enough to create the yellowing. This clematis has been planted at this location for several years. Each year a rabbit was eating the plant when young. I said enough is enough and put rabbit guard around the base of plant. So, this year we are very happy to have what is pictured.

Back to my original question, is this yellowing of the leaves normal, or is it how this plant grows?

Can someone please identify this clematis?
