I am no expert but I did buried mine last summer. I left the leave alone because I think the whole purpose is for them to make and store energy in the bulb for the fall/winter. I dug them out in October, and then I cut off the leaves and put them through a 10 weeks of dormancy. While not in time for xmas, they all came back beautifully for me. I have mine in the ground again now.
