Planting and Dormancy for Amaryllis

I have some Amaryllis happy in pots. They are cheapie bulbs from a Christmas kit, and I'd like to plant them. I'm in zone 6b, but I read some folks have success in cold climes by planting the bulbs deep and in a sheltered spot, so I'm going to try.

My question is, since I want to plant deep, do I cut off the leaves and plant the bulbs now? Or do I attempt to force it into dormancy for a fall planting?
