I don't care one way or the other but I'd be cautious doing both. One is very acidic and the other is not. After a while you might have a hard time getting one watering mix to work for both.

Laura, I have used both the organic and the all purpose ProMix in my pots and the organic had less perlite in it. Have the same watering habits for both.

I have done it, but cannot give you a long term analysis yet.

I also use 1:1 pbf:promix for various other plants. Still experimenting, because I imagine some plants might not like it.

Try screening your peat and see if it feels better.

I haven't used promix specifically, but I always replace the "peat" portion of the 511 with a quality peat-based potting mix. My favorite is Ocean Forest, which is very similar to promix as far as loft and drainage.

Hey Mike- I saw on one of the older threads that you put jade plants into the 511 mix. Did they do well in it? I have one that's 2 years old and if it worked out for you, I think I will repot mine into 511 as well. Just being curious over here :-)

Definately understand what you're saying. As the two 5-1-1 mixes age (old with peat, new with promix) the ph might vary enough to mess up your watering.

I used ProMix HP as the peat portion of 5-1-1 for a couple of years without any problems. It's just peat and perlite + mycorrhizae--but to stick exactly to Al's mix, you'd have to adjust a little bit of perlite. The idea is just to give it something that will hold water - -which ProMix does, but it's a very airy soil, unless you let it completely dry down (when used on its own), in which case it solidifies, as does all peat.
