Yea theres a nice groundcover of these ferns at my grandmas backyard and I can see that it has spread. Does it need to have wet soil like many other ferns? I am looking for one that actually doesn't need to be grown by swamps, ponds, rivers etc and can actually be grown in regular soil.

Of our native ferns:

Silver false spleenwort (Deparia acrostichoides); Glade fern (Diplazium pycnocarpon); Spinulose woodfern; Intermediate woodfern; Marginal woodfern; Christmas fern; Interrupted fern; New York fern. Maybe Ostrich fern (likes it a bit damp). Maybe Hayscented fern (weedy).

A bit on the damp side I would say, but not soggy. It's a rather undemanding species once it gets established.

Ok..then how about the Japanese painted fern? I have 3 of these in my yard that I planted last summer and I barely water them this year and they are doing great so far

Yes, that seems to be undemanding. And there's a Japanese "autumn fern" that does well. But my interest is mostly in native species. There are other native species than the ones I named above that might do well in a garden under moderately dry conditions, but the ones I named are those that I've at last occasionally seen for sale.
