HELP with fireplace mantel.

I am just about to order the 51" tall Fontana mantel from the Mantel Shoppe. However, I am not sure if I should make it 2 " taller. I have 5" raised hearth (which the mantel will sit on) The ceilings are 90" high. I just cant visualize what this will look like any help would be great

Get yourself some graph paper and draw it up to scale. Draw up the entire wall side-to-side and floor-to-ceiling. The height of the mantel is just as important as the relationship to the width--it's all about proper proportion. You'll be able to see this best in a scaled drawing.

This is the fireplace, in 2 weeks the mason will be refacing it with black marble and extending the hearth by 3" on each side. That will also be covered with marble. I am thinking the mantel should be white, my husband was hoping for cherry.
