They may not send anything up this year unless they were in cold storage. Patience.

Roots are not normally sent out until cooler weather in the fall unless the root has been in cold storage and the weather mimics fall in being cool and wet.

I bought some really cheap peonies from Aldi's. One broke dormancy that Spring. The other three came up the following year. I have yet to see blooms, but what I learned so far about peonies was worth the few bucks I paid.

I don't spend money on prepacked bare roots sold at places like Walmart, Home Depot anymore. You have to wait a year just to see some leaves then another 2-3 years for the actual bloom. I either get potted peonies or bare root directly from growers.

I didn't know that until after I bought them. I read it somewhere. Now I'm stuck with them :/

i wish I had known, I think it works out to be the same price. I even saw tree peonies the other day for the same price for the bulbs.

It does take longer for those roots to get big enough for flowers but I wouldn't say they're worthless, some of my favorite peonies are from those bags! Once you see them bloom you're hooked, then you start ordering from the online growers. Don't know about everyone but I'm more likely to try a new plant if it's just a few dollars rather than the hundreds some rare roots can be....

Personally I would grab those tree peonies. Plant them now so that only a few inches of the stem is out of the ground. If they are in packages and not in pots when you open the package look for a small white tag either in the growing medium or around the stem. It will tell you the name of the tree peony. If it is moist and planting material is sticking to it do not touch other than to remove. Wiping the label with anything even your finger will remove the ink.
