Can yellow with blue trim work on our house?

last modified: 9 years ago

We've taken off the 1950's metal siding. The nice Scottish siding man comes next week to begin repairing and renovating the original 1925 wood siding. Then we paint. But what color?

We have no affinity for the earth tones that California bungalows frequently get. We like color and want something that lifts the house off the ground. No browns, no reds. We'd love yellow with blue trim - colorful and happy, and goes with pink. purple and white flowers, which will eventually be growing. Photos of three sides of the house below, plus the yellow / blue combination that we love. We considered light blue with white trim, though we really favor the yellow.

Neighbors on our side of the street are beige, light gray, light green. Across the street are light green, pale yellow with plum steps and front path, brown with bright orange and green accents (!), and an ice white.

The landscaping will eventually include an arbor with climbing roses and jasmine leading to a paver path to the front door. We'll put something that flowers and that bees and butterflies like in front of the house (lavendar?), and the front lawn will be wrapped with a fence of some sort with flowering vines / something green. The white gate will go and be replaced with a nice wood door with 3/4 glass. The small landing by the front door will be extended 3 feet, just past where the two potted fruit trees are right now, as will the overhang. We'll build a little front porch there by extending the sides of the house along the sides of the extended landing, with columns to hold the overhang. Will likely grow some kind of flowering vine up those columns.

Your super sweet house deserves white cafe curtains on that front window!! No blinds, please.....

Love the "blue ceiling of the porch" idea. And love your landscaping plan.

I have lived in my quaint new town for 5 months. The house I referred to is in another town. I did realize that the craftsman on the next corner is yellow and blue. A couple blocks down, a bungalow (I know the owner) is yellow with a greenish trim. I feel strange about posting pictures of neighbors homes.

There are some examples of yellow bungalows from a pro on here: Susan Berry Design, Inc. I don't know how to link to the page on my device. Some have trim in blue, grey or green. They also incorporate white.

    I vote no shutters.

looks like the yellow houses are from a yellow house idea book from the designer, not necessarily their designs.

Yup, found the yellow house pictures. Helpful indeed. Thank you.

Yes to the yellow, blue and white! If you want blue in the trim, maybe you could just do the inside of the window frames in blue-white on the face and blue on the return. And definitely a big yes to the colors you're considering for inside. They're just beautiful and such a nice change from all the neutral grays!

Yes to those interior colors. They are lovely! I like the greens in the wallpaper, and think spring green accents will work with the blue walls and light furniture.

I just re-did a bedroom in light blue green and have a yellow and green watercolor my grandmother painted. Off white curtains and a blue rug. It's a fresh and pretty combination!

You know what's crazy? I keep finding the colors I'm considering in the original layers of paint in this house. The original interior, it turns out, was a deeper version of what I want. The dull brown window trim color has a bright and vibrant blue underneath. House was never yellow though - looks like she was pale green, then white.

I'd LOVE to do blue windows as an accent, but though they're theoretically paintable, my window guy (they've all either been or about to be replaced with double pane, argon Marvins), tells me unequivocably not to. Paint doesn't still well to them, so they stay white. I can only accent blue on the trip or other areas of the house. I *could* possible leave my windows and trim white but just paint the stop blue. It would be a thin accent strip in the white. I also like the idea of painting, say, just the underside of the (few) architectural pieces of trim in blue, with the rest white. Hmmm ... any pros have an opinion on this?

That is exciting about what you are finding under all the layers of paint! But don't go crazy here. Keep it simple and classic. Yellow body, white trim, blue front door and porch ceiling. That is the best bet. Then you can put some fun into maybe mosaic blue and white additions to a couple of your pots for flowers. That is where you have your fun. The house is kind of background. Thanks for the update.

Listen to Flo, her advice is spot on : ) The simple paint scheme will be beautiful. I love the blue porch ceiling, it's fun & not too Hansel & Gretel.

The pots are actually going to go. Everything will be in the ground so I don't have to remember to water them, and so they can benefit from moisture deep in the soil.

I won't go crazy with color - just looking for options to accent more with the blue, if they exist. The houses I've seen that are able to do it well have detailing we don't have. Thank you all. I so enjoy your comments and feedback.

Ok - if any of you are still around - at long last, painting begins on Monday and will be done by the end of the week. LOVE the colors we chose. Benjamin Moore. Will post as soon as the painting is done.

Pale yellow, with robins egg blue door. White trim.

Or deep rich blue on the body of the house. White trim.

Yellow is Benjamin Moore Sundance, blue is Benjamin Moore Windmill Wings - this may be the entire entryway area. The ceiling of the little landing into the door will be BM White Satin, a pale blue. Trim is BM Simply White.

Here’s an idea on getting a teensy more blue on the outside. Go with the pale yellow house, white trim, blue door...above your porch, see that triangle area (don’t know the proper name).....have a piece of wood cut to fit the entire Triangle then paint a design on it in mostly blue, with touches of white and yellow. House in my neighborhood similar....its a much bigger house, but its yellow, and above the front in a large triangle like yours they have an amazing peacock tail painting.

Ok, last minute color change. Painted areas of the front and side of the house in the Sundance that gives me a giant, involuntary smile - but have also wondered if it will be too bright on the entire house. Had it cut 50% - lovely but mellow in a way that my huge smile disappears. Tomorrow I'm getting Hawthorne Yellow to try as an alternative.

Yellow mostly up. Last minute tweak to the blue in process - the fascia over the front door and the front door trim are blue. Will spend the evening choosing a new blue and will post pictures tomorrow.

Stuck on the blue, if anyone has an opinion. Looking at Benjamin Moore Riviera Azure and Summer Mist. Open to suggestions as I'd originally envisioned a brighter blue. I'll postpone the final painting a few days if I need.

    Hawthorne Yellow (already up)

    Riviera Azure

    Summer Mist

    Brazilian Blue

Like the purplish cast of summer mist. Brazilian blue is too strong compared to your yellow.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. I fear the first one may be a bit light is all. I think the Brazilian would be pretty if you do the windows similar to What Irene Morrisey shows above.... depends on how you use your blue trim if Going Brazilian. I like that it's more rich in tone, but not Crayola blue!

Use the colors posted in the picture offered by "chloebud" .
The yellow is gentle and creamy, the white is crisp and the blue is not wimpy. Since you have neighbors with colorful houses, this color scheme will be charming.
I, also, applaud your intent to return to the original siding.

OK, Summer Mist and Riviera Azure read as way more purple than the online examples. Too cute. Colorist is telling me to do the Windmill Wings I originally got (for a brighter yellow exterior) at double the formula. Here they are - y'all approve? I'm down to the wire. If I don't think this is right, I need to cancel the painters for tomorrow and wait to choose a blue.

The chip is much more blue than it shows on my computer, so perhaps this is all moot. I'm overwhelmed right now.

I say stay with your first impulse. I love navy blue, but that wasn't your dream.

I like Windmill Wings, but differences in color samples vs real color ( as you stated) is compounded by color distortion on computer/phone screens. Trust your instincts as you did with the beautiful yellow. It is very easy to go wrong with yellow and you did not!!! I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the blues you have posted. Best wishes!

Okay. House painting went slightly amiss today. The fascia over the door was painted blue. I need to have it re-primed and painted white. I think I want the trim around the door white also, so it's only the door, when the security gate is open, that's blue. Two photos attached, one with the security gate open so you can see the door, one with it closed.

I LOVE the door when I'm sitting inside and see it against the w hitewall of the entryway. It's pushing the limits of my taste on the
outside. I little cloyingly cute. Certainly a vast improvement from what it was before we painted.

Here's the front door from inside the house. This I do like.

Coming along very nicely. Yes, you are on track white overhang and white train around security door. Then with yard clean up you won’t recognize house. It is darling. Not cloying at all. Just tasteful update.

Thanks Flo - so you agree, turn all that blue trim white and I'm back on track. Just leave the door behind the gate blue/periwinkle.

I begin choosing flowers for landscaping in front of the house next.

Really lovely and not the least bit cutesy. Yes the trim will be perfect in white. Hope you can find a way to echo the blue inside as well. When I've been high in the mountains in winter the sky has a purple shade like that.

kaye1951, it's the Riviera - way more purple than it looks online. In the end I just had to make a choice. I'd like it more blue than purple, but this is what I've got. For now. Unless I hear a compelling reason not to I'm painting the fascia over the door back to white.

Looks great. I agree the trim should be white. Would it be possible to spray your security door the same blue. Or remove it completely?

Yes, I looked into painting it but it’s not possible without looking awful, I’m told. For now it needs to stay on, so white gate it is. I’m thinking of black house numbers to add a little grown up to the house. Simple clean lines.

I don’t see a good spot for house numbers on the house. I suggest you incorporate into landscape with a little plaque in the garden or get a pretty plaque for spot just to right of front door.

Yellow and Blue looks nice together. Many schools use yellow and blue as their colors for a reason. Personally, I like the blue house with a bright yellow trim or yellow house with blue trim in more of a pastel palette.

Flo, I was thinking of vertical numbers to the left of the doorway, on the wall with the living room window. Saw beautiful yellow with black accents that added a little grown-up gravitas.
