Well, I think your urge to paint was justified, even if the first attempt is not as you'd like. How would you feel about making the chair legs and table base black, and using a copper paint for the top? You might also try a faux copper finish for a more dimensional look, ending up with something like this.

With turquoise blue legs stealing all the focus, it won't matter much what colour you paint the top; you have the table equivalent of a dancing girl at the Moulin Rouge!
