That is a single clump, and then there is another on the other side of a Thuja occidentalis 'Degroot's Spire' evergreen. I am pretty sure this is their 4th season. I'll try and take a wider shot later today to show their shape and general size. Most plants have their moment, and right now it's three of those 'Millenium' that really pop in our pool garden.

In a thread from last season, GW members greenhearted, Twros spoke highly of the similar looking allium (to "Millenium") called "Summer Beauty". Anyone have this as well as "Millenium" so you could compare and contrast?

I'd love to see more pics. I believe 'Summer Beauty' was a bit less densely flowered with more open habit? I remember being impressed with it in a magazine recently.

I have a.angulosum bulbs on the way...which are. I think, in the lineage of 'Millenium'. 'Silver Spring' is another popular allium (in the UK) with bulbs selling for 10x as much as the species, a.nigrum. I find I struggle with an innate cheapskate tendency (and crappy earnings as a sporadic jobbing gardener)...so stumping up hard cash for a named hybrid is always tricky (see thalictrum). OTOH, these are some lovely images of 'Millenium' - enough to get me checking out UK sources (mostly sold out). I have also been shamefully contemplating a poor little a.senescens which is utterly bullied by a clump of campanula persicifolia and a thuggish begonia...

Millenium is making all my alliums look a little pale and pasty! The only one I saw was in a mixed pot and not for sale, so I might have to keep my eyes open a little better next spring.

Y'all have me convinced that I need to get purchase some of these soon for fall planting! I see a couple comments that they do OK in part shade. The area I have in mind gets anywhere from 3-5 hours of hot afternoon sun, and has rather moist soil. Really need some early summer interest in that bed. The only thing I had was the regular old orange daylillies, and I took all those out. Any varieties that you recommend for bloom around that time?

For all the lovers of 'Millennium', Gilbert Wild has them on sale, buy one get one for $4.50. I just stocked up. I've ordered all of these from them and while they come in as fairly small plants, they bulk up quickly and for the price appear to be a great value.

UPDATE:

These MILLENIUM were in full bloom around the first week of August and they are remaining upright into the last week of November.

If you had to choose ONE allium which would represent all that you love about allium, which would it be? Okay, maybe your top two...

Err, I love the native A. cernuum (nodding wild onion), it just seems so graceful to me, and I'm a natives fan.

How tall is millenium? Does the greenery last as long as most perennials? Would you describe it as pink or mauve? I know this is a long shot - and I wouldn't consider it necessary - but do you think it is helpful in deterring the Japanese beetle somewhat?

IMO, Millenium is not much for foliage. I assume you see the photos, it's somewhere in between pink and purple. Mine (heat here) is more pink.

But what is good about "Millenium's" foliage is that it stays green till the very end ie no browning until late fall. (Unlike the spring flowering ones whose strappy leaves brown up if you look at them sideways ;))

Hee, yes, Rouge it has foliage..and that's about all I can say about it.

You see they claim that members of the garlic and onion family are good at deterring Japanese Beetles. They love eating my roses. Now, I don't know if anything really does deter a Japanese beetle, but if it is tall (closer to the rose flower height) and does keep its leaves then it would in my opinion be more helpful than chives (too short) or the other alliums that completely disappear after blooming.

Here is Allium ‘moly’. Very tiny to start but has multiplied into nice sized clumps...

They stay nice looking for a long time with the flower fading to a creamy/tan color.

I amost shovel pruned them to start as they were so small...they made me laugh! I’m glad I waited.

Yes, a few days ago, I noticed millenium poking up...and the first leaves are reminiscent of daffodil foliage (being only one or two).

'Deer and rabbits leave millenium allium alone'. Well, in the face of total allium disaster, I can truthfully state that they do NOT leave Millenium, or seemingly, any other allium alone, since every single one of mine has been reduced to tufty stalks - which may well bloom...ONCE.

Are you pulling our appendages Campanula? (Aren't alliums a member of the onion family and so abhorrent to any 4 legged (or more) creature?)

In desperate times, I've seen rabbits (and/or mice) eat the wild allium vineale (lawn weed), so it's certainly possible.

Does Millenium self seed and if so are the seedlings much different from the original?

Millenium is suppossed to be sterile as it's a hybrid.

Well, Rouge, I had hoped so myself, hence my wild planting of literally hundreds of them...and while the bulbs may well be magnificently ignored underground, it appears that every living creature also enjoys some oniony salads for their meals...because not a single bulb has managed to rise more than 2 inches above ground without being comprehensively munched to a nub. I am disappoint.

Wandering off topic, but my desert iris (aril breds) are being munched by slugs this year due to an unending torrent of water (rain). Darn Mother Nature, bring it in July. I'm not suppossed to see sunny for a week.

Very little spread. That is part of the appeal of this variety.

I’ve had Millenium for 3 years, the clumps have grown but not spread.

What has bugged me about my many established clumps of Millennium is the weedy grass stalks/blades that has become 'intertwined' with these alliums :(.
