I'm going with DM. Pictures of 'Frosty' show points on the leaves which mine don't have. Hope I'm right.

It doesn't really matter if you are right or wrong. Enjoy it for what it brings you.

I often buy begonias (and other beauties) without a name because if you pass on it today, it may not be there tomorrow. If I get a name later on, then great but if I don't, not a deal breaker.

Here is a seed grown begonia (a little over a year old). Is it worth keeping and naming? The on on the right (peeking in) is a seed grown one as well.

I don't know the names of these rexes except the one on the right that is probably Fire Breathing Dragon (it was originally Ringy Dingy but the ladies at Harmony changed the name to FBD). You can barely see the 3rd begonia on the bottom in this photo.

I know a few of these names but not all of them. The big green one is popenoei, the one behind it (grey) is U508, I see Little Brother Montgomery, Boomer, Asocial Hilo Beauty, and the cane that looks like Lucerna is probably Purple Haze.

Bashful Bandit (the palmate leaf) and 3 rexes in the same pot. I don't know the rexes as they were bought by a woman in our club at our local chain nursery. I started many plants from a few leaves of each rex and Bashful Bandit back in March or February and gave the mother plants to another person in our club. The pink bloom is from Lana.

one of the other rexes in the same pot reminds me of Purple Curl. The third rex is on the backside of this pot and hard to get to, to get a good photo.

Selby's Trash (the bright green) and Proud Mary (the sizemorea looking one) are from a club member 12 years ago and I keep those names as given. The pink one in front is Stormy Sunset which is a sport of Passing Storm. The darker green leaf on the top edge of this photo is convolvulacea (the morning glory begonia). The other begonia peeking in from the top left corner might be Red Umbo but I would have to go out and verify.

This one is easy - Red Umbo (huge leaves) and polka dot Flamingo Queen which can be hard to keep in winter.

I know Little Brother in this photo and tenuipilia var. kennedyii (looks like Rajah in a way) but none of these rexes. A weedy semperflorens is on the right edge and a red ruellia that seeds all over the place including my pots.

I'm as jazzed about inexpensive Dragon Wings and 'Big' bronze and green leaf begonias with all their endless red blooms. The Kong coleus fit in pretty good too

Yes, I did raise those from seed and have lots of seedlings under lights that need moving up ASAP. Too much...

Here is one I have given to many people and also the commercial greenhouse in the Orlando area.

I am calling it Butch's Mac. It is just another maculata hybrid (mother maculata and father more than likely Mrs. Hashimoto)

and at the nursery this year where they have it in a ten gallon container (at least ten gallons) where it looks like it has had many cuttings done in the two years since I dropped it off.

Gorgeous! I raised some 'Laurie's Love' seedlings last year. Nothing noteworthy came from them. I've tried crossing but no luck so far. Planning to try again this winter.

Any reason to switch from fluorescent to LED? Lower energy cost/longer life?

It took me 4 years to swap all my T12 out to T8 so it was a bit of time and money (I have around 90 lights so figure $25 per fixture plus bulbs - about $2,500 worth). I have no intention to switch to LED anytime soon. I do have one LED fixture still in the box that I bought a few months ago to be used for seed germination.

I love it when the cactus finally blooms but then I cut it back to make it manageable from the last time it bloomed (2015). It was about 7 feet tall then.

Yep. Those cacti are cuttings from much taller plants. The aechmea will get a much better spot when it gets bigger.

The LEDs put out a brighter light..at least to my eyeballs. The bulbs are fixed. No replacing. I think they are less energy...not sure. And I think they last longer than my cheap fl. fixtures. Time will tell.

They use columnar cacti in Aruba as a living hedge to keep the wild donkeys out of their yards - pretty cool.

We replaced a lot of our light bulbs with LEDs a few years ago since they were advertised as long life - 22 years or some kind of extra special BS. We were spending around $15 per bulb (Cree and some other brand at HD). Within six months to a year, we were replacing them with CFL or old incandescent lights as they quit working. Of course we threw receipts and boxes out (who wants to keep those for 20 years?) I was pretty steamed about that mess. We have had much better luck with can lights though in the kitchen and basement but the bulbs are $35 to $50 each. OUCH!

Prices have come down and we are replacing vanity lights with the new LED lights (make sure you keep warm lights and day lights separate though as the look can be garish if you mix them). And we replaced one of our garage fluorescent with LED and plan on replacing the other side with LED this weekend. And we are getting brave to start replacing some lamps with LED again but not wholesale like we once did. Once burned, we don't want to repeat the same mistake.

LED shop lights have come down in price as well and one day I may start changing out the 90 shop lights in the basement but it will be a while before I even think of that.

The interior of Aruba reminded me of Arizona. I must've skipped shooting pictures of living hedges when we visited.

I thought when Sam's lowered their LED shop light from $50 to $35 was good enough to buy. Still in the box after nearly six months. It will soon be hung for winter.

Just happened on this at local Walmart and bought it. Only 20.00! Cheapest LED shoplight I've found so far.

That's great news. LEDs have become the new standard for lighting and lower prices will make it happen. I bought a two pack of floodlight/spotlight from HD last week for less than $19. My previous lights like this were running $35 to $50 for one bulb just a few years ago.

Remember. I am just overwintering plants not trying to grow tomatoes. I've seen those expensive LEDs in my local hydro store. I wouldn't buy them even if I could afford them because they make plants look ghastly. I guess they're great for optimum growth but I couldn't handle not being able to see my plants in their natural color.

Thanks Kyle for the recommendation. Wow! That is a good deal. I am going to try the standard 4 foot shelving, with 4 or 5 shelves. Do you think one of these lights would be enough per shelf, or am I better off with 2 per shelf?

I am also just trying to keep stuff alive and hopefully not in decline over the winter.

I'm not really sure. Basically, I use 2 fixtures for plants requiring lots of light like succulents and cacti for example. I think ivies, ferns, etc. can do with one. Some plants I want to perform at their best, others I just want to survive till spring and I can put them outside.

Experiment. You'll get the feel for it. HTH.

I am still looking at lights if you can believe it! I found these for $25 for a double row of LEDs. 42W, 4500 lumens and 5000K. I ordered a couple and they.look nice, I am unsire about the cover though. If has a perfectly clear piece of plastic covering the doible row of LEDs. Moat othet lights seem to use a frosted cover of aome kond and I am wondering if this is better because of diffusing the light? Any thoughts? Kyle are all of your light covers frosted?

None of my lights have a cover, frosted or otherwise. Just bare bulbs showing.

Seems like a clear cover or bare bulb like Kyle's would be much better than having an opaque cover to get all the light available. If it was the sun, then yes you would want some shade unless you are growing cactus and succulents (even some begonias can take full sun though).

The only issue I've seen with lights is when the leaves come in contact with the bare bulb (fluorescent in my case) as it can cause leaf burn. LED lights run a lot cooler so there may not be an issue of leaf contact with the light itself.

Butch I was reading on some blog somewhere that they felt their LED lights were too focused and a xover would diffuse the lights. Good point that it would cut down on available light though.

The only thing I've heard negative about LEDs is they fall off fast but that doesn't make a lot of sense. Light no matter the source should obey the same physical laws as any other light.

I wished I had kept the receipts of the LED lights we bought at HD a few years ago and after about six months they started failing. What a waste of money those were.

I hope all the kinks are worked out now, as we have started buying more LED lights to replace the old incandescent and CFL lights around the house.

Wow, 6 months is not much life! Too bad you could not return them. Hope the technology has improved!! Not so sure Rural King has a generous return policy--I had never heard of them before my light search.

Six months is abysmal. I could've gotten a 3 way for 1/5 the money and still gotten six months out of it. When it is advertised as having a 22 year life, you'd expect it to at least go 10 years.

I think LED lights have come a long way and prices have really fallen.

Yes--$25 is such a good price for LEDs. And the online reviews were good. I'll let you know how they do for me.
