calotropis gigantea seed

Hi I just plant calotropis gigantea seed in small vase with potting soil and peat moss, but I forgot to put in seed 24 hours in warm water before planting. Does it mean it won't grow? If not true, then how many times water does it need to grow? Please reply.

desperate for answer.

I don't think soaking or not soaking will affect how your seed grows. It just might take a day or two longer for the seed to germinate. For some types of seed, an overnight soak just helps speed up the germination process. If you've just now planted the seed and you want to give them an overnight soak, remove them, rinse them off and soak, then replant tomorrow. If you're asking how much water to use to soak the seed, just run some warm water in the bottom of a clean coffee cup or glass, put your seed in and let them set overnight. It doesn't require much water, enough to cover the seed an inch or two.

Whatever you do, just be sure you maintain moisture in your potting mix, not wet, just damp and set your seed container in a warm spot. Once the seed are planted, you don't want them to dry out. I have placed a plastic baggie over the top of my seed pot to help maintain moisture until the seed begin to germinate. If you do this, just remove the plastic for a few minutes each day to allow for air exchange and circulation.

If your potting mix is dry, before you plant your seed, you can dampen the mix with warm water. Using warm water allows the potting mix, especially peat moss, to absorb the water more easily.

In my limited experience, C gigantea seed germinate fairly quickly.

Thank you for ur response. I have already plant it and I water them. How many weeks does it take to start growing? Please reply. It's my first time planting. Just want to make sure I am doing it right. And you also mention put plastic bag on top of the pot. For how many hours do I put plastic bag on top of the pot? When take it off do I water the plant? Let me know plz. Thank you

Not knowing where you are located or if you are attempting to germinate indoors or out, the main thing is to just maintain a dampness in the potting mix. Not wet.

The seed, if viable, should germinate within a few days if conditions are right.

The seed should only just barely be covered by the potting mix. Do not plant them deep into the potting mix. Planting the seed too deeply will cause the seed to rot. What I do is place the seed on top of the potting mix, then sprinkle a bit of damp mix over the seed, just enough to lightly cover the seed.

The object of the plastic baggie is to maintain moisture in the potting mix until the seed germinates, so the soil surface doesn't dry out. Your seed should be right near the surface of the soil so you just want to maintain a dampness, not wet. If your potting mix was dampened and you use something to cover the soil surface, you should not need to water again until the seed has germinated and is growing. If you cover with plastic, be sure to remove the plastic for a bit each day so the air circulates and of course, remove it or uncover a portion of the pot at the first sign of germination.

Maybe it would be easier to leave the top of your germination pot uncovered and mist the surface with water to maintain dampness. The idea is to just maintain a dampness until the seed germinate.

This plant likes excellent drainage, good soil aeration. Heavy, wet growing conditions could cause the roots to rot.

It might help if you explain how you are attempting to germinate the seed. Are you keeping your pot indoors or outdoors. If outdoors, is your pot setting in the shade? What are your local air temps and humidity levels?

There might be some video on YouTube that could explain better. It isn't difficult and you may just be over thinking this.

I am sorry I live in Houston tx. I kept the pot indoor. I am watering the plant every day. I feel peat moss is little more mix in potting soil. But I am not sure since it's my first time. I don't know how many weeks it takes to plant to start growing. Because there's no instruction with the seed when I bought it online. That's why I was asking your help. I will check on YouTube to see if I find video.

ps soil is moist, because I was told by someone to make sure soil is moist.

I planted five seeds about two weeks ago -- the fifth one just popped through the sol this morning. Mine were soaked in water 24-48 hrs before planting. I have only seen pictures of this one, but am looking forward to it growing.

By the way, mine were indoors at first, but they have been outdoors and in the sun, getting a daily watering, for at least the last week. You want to keep them damp and the warmth helps.
