Found gold nuggets!

I went to Kroger tonight for fresh fruits and veggies, then WOW found a big bag of gold nuggets! I got a little too excited and got a funny look from a person. I told the kids that these are what our little tree will eventually grow.

These are huge, much bigger than what I ever imagined.

This is hands down the best mandarin I have ever tasted. It was very juicy, lots of flavor, and sweet. I bet the bag is gone by tomorrow. I peeled one and gave a piece to everyone. They were blown away by how good it tastes.

Laura- we chose the right tree to grow! :-D I don't think my fruit will ever be this big but I hope it has the same amazing flavor!

I bought a 5 lb bag of gold nuggets at Costco yesterday and they're half gone already. Gold nuggets and Tangos are my favorite and what I consider to be the best tasting mandarins in the world when they're picked at their peak ripeness.

I am happy to say that I can totally agree with that! I am so happy that I have a chance to eat some! I am jealous Evan bc you have two trees in the ground and one of them is huge! Happy eating! I would be whispering to that tree everyday, "hurry up, your fruit is delicious" haha!

Vlad- If I can figure out a good winter situation, a tango tree is on my list of trees to get!

Hi Amanda. What do you mean by a good winter situation? Room to keep it in?

Now you can understand why I was so obsessed with getting a tree this season! I found out that I prefer the GNs that are less bumpy. I read 2 different things regarding that... 1. that the GNs will loose their pronounced bumpiness if the tree is pruned and 2. that the pronounced bumpiness is a sign of a 'young' tree. The GNs will become smoother as the tree matures. You should hear my son when I take out a GN..he is 4 yo and knows GNs by sight! I can never finish a GN by myself with the family around. Whole unpeeled ones have been known to disappear from my sight.

You all have to stop making me want more tree's ;) I don't have a particular affinity for manderins/oranges etc. but hearing everyone's comments on them makes me think I haven't had the right one. I'll be looking in the stores for more varieties to try. And figuring out where the hell I am going to fit these trees in winter.

Vlad- yes I need to figure out where to keep the trees. I have my back patio door that gets a lot of sun and I hook up my lights. If I get too many trees they will not all fit by the door haha. I have been thinking of setting up my garage to store them, but 1. it's not heated and liquids freeze out there. 2. There is no natural light, I would need to hook up many lights. I'm still brainstorming the whole situation.

My heart skipped a half beat when I saw single gold nuggets at my grocery!

Unfortunately, they didn't look good enough to try. Kind of mealy?

Plus I've had really bad luck trying citrus from the grocery this year: pommelo, murcott, guava (not citrus, i know).

how did feel? heavy? light? soft?

Aww.. Amanda your daughter is a real cutie! That Gold Nugget looks so huge in her little, bitty hands.. :)

I will need to search the stores for some GN fruit. My GN tree had severe branch dieback late this winter, unfortunately.

Hibiscus- the one they cut open does not look good, like they drained all the juice and life out of it haha. Mine were full of juice inside and very solid.

jinny- thank you! She couldn't wait to eat them! They were completely eaten within the night! I have four kids so food doesn't last long around here anyways haha. They were so delicious!

I have found that the bagged Gold Nuggets were better than the binned individual ones. For some reason. Gold Nuggets and Sumos were the best citrus I have had this winter and spring. Oh and in the Fall, Fallglo tangerines juiced are the best.
