Window treatments using canvas drop

I am redecorating my living room my living room. I had my sofa reupholstered in a beautiful pea green color with hints of gold. I plan on painting the sofa wall an indigo blue so the sofa will pop.

My original plan was to find an indigo and green ikat fabric for the pillows and window treatments to coordinate with the indigo wall. Unfortunately for me I have champagne taste on a beer budget.

I found a beautiful ikat fabric by Brunschwig for a whopping $370 a yard. Needless to say I will not be purchasing one of yard of fabric let alone eight yards.

My question is this: Has anyone used canvas drop cloths as window treatments? I had an idea to buy a stencil with an ikat design and stencil using indigo paint. I would also make pillows with the same design.

Actually, I bought some beautiful linen fabric at Walmart for $8.97/yard and it's very wide, you could look there.

I don't know that canvas drop cloths would hang properly, the canvas tends to be thick and a heavyweight. Perhaps you could try linen? As long as it's a washable linen, I would suggest washing to remove the mfg finish and drying to pre-shrink.

I love linen, the problem is so expensive and I am in a rental. Don't want to spend that amount of money on window treatment. However I thank you for your input.

I do know people who have used drop cloths and said they worked out fine. I have not actually seen this done. But if you liked that $$$ Brunschwig, do you think you would like to have drop cloths on your windows? Have you considered burlap? I've seen people create some beautiful draperies with burlap. Don't know what kind of quality linen Walmart has, but may be worth a look to stay under budget.

JMittman Designs. Good point, every time I walk by my windows I would be disgusted. Then I probably will rip them from my windows LOL! My local Wal-Mart no longer carry fabrics. Perhaps I will try Hancock's
