We're going to need some information before you get any plant advice, and I recommend that you post your inquiry with the information in one of the other forums, like Perennials, Shrubs, or Landscape Design, when you get the info together.

First, what zone are you in? Alaska has three zones, so look at this page :https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/planting-zones/alaska-planting-zones.htm and figure out what zone you're in.

Second. what kind of plants are you thinking of? Perennials, shrubs, ferns, flowers, trees, etc. That looks like a nice porch to sit on and look out at things, so is there a view that you don't want to block, or one that you do want to block?

Third, how much upkeep do you want to do on a regular basis? Plant and forget (my personal favorite)? Out there every day to tweak plants into place?

Fourth, do you mind waiting for plants to reach maturity? It's much cheaper to buy young plants and take care of them for a couple of years than to buy plants that are already mature, especially trees and shrubs.

Fifth, what wildlife are around that may be a bit too interested in your plants? Do you need to plant only things that deer aren't interested in?

I know that all sounds like little problems, but it's better to think about them before you start planting, so you don't lose plants altogether or get disappointed and give up on your property.

Alaska has a lot more than 3 zones!! And plant choices for the 'Far North' may be completely inappropriate! I just did a landscape design for a client in Craig, AK and their growing zone was not all that far off from mine......z7b!!

I'm not at all sure the OP needs to go elsewhere with this request :-) We just need to know specifically where in AK they are located.....there is a world of gardening difference between Nome and Ketchikan!!

I would find a local landscaper or garden center and ask for advice there. They would have the plants that thrive in your area and also know what the weeds in your garden are.
