Very nice!

So I noticed this on the newest leaf today, and only on this leaf and this side. Does it appear to be sun scortch? I'm unsure if it's sunburn, too much water or fertilizer burn? What do you all think?

Looks wonderful, I think the spots may be from the sun and maybe some water dried on the leave, I wouldnt worry about it unless the marks spread.

Yes I haven't seen it spread to any other leaf or to the other side. It's gotten a bit bigger or more pronounced on that side of the leaf but probably the sprinklers got it wet one morning before it got 9 hours of sun.

That's not sunburn. I get the same wine stain splotching on some of my banana cultivars when they're younger. It goes away.

Sunburn looks more like a bronze holographic copper/brown on my Basjoos when i put them into full sun after a long winter in the basement! That stops after a few days-week on mine.

It stumped me too. And it has gotten worse on that side. But hasn't gone to any other leaf so... who's to say.

ok, that is not wine splotching. I was wrong if its getting worse like that. If its not spreading then that's a good thing. It may have got a little damaged when unrolling.

I've seen many cases where rocks as a top mulch can cause major problems with the rocks containing too much alkaline. I'd remove the rocks and put mulch down. See if that helps. If it does then fertilize them and they will take off fast!

I will definitely consider removing the rocks. Only issue is I share the house with two others, whom wanted the rocks.

Congrats! That took no time. I've had mine in the ground for about 10 months and sill no sign of any pups. They will fill that spot of the garden in no time.

Yes I was rather surprised. The sun down here is so abundant as is the rain. I fertilized with a 10-10-10. Not sure what I did or if it was just luck! But I'm happy! The plant is growing faster then I thought possible !

Alright. Update time! I know I post lots of updates but this is kinda like my growth diary, and I hope y'all like seeing it's progress as much as I do!

So, the plant has continued pushing out more beautiful, larger leaves. And.... I found two MORE pups coming up! This things just going crazy!

How's it doing at the end of July?

It's doing well! Though it seems to have slowed down a bit and is pushing out slightly smaller leaves. I've fertilized it but idk, maybe the pups are stealing some of its energy.

I think its doing fine, how often are you watering?

lol I'm really anal about it lol. Though it does seem to be doing fine lol. And water? Oh no, no supplemental water. Hear in GA we've gotten wayyyyy too much rain lol. Rains almost everyday for a few hours and it pours. Sadly I've no gutter so all the water pours down the roof and into this garden.

As long as you have the heat with all that rain it'll be fine. Yes you are right about it slowing down when the pups show up. Some people like to only keep no more then 2 pups at a time to see the main plant get some height. Others have a clump of 3-6 plants and takes long to get to a decent size.

Here are my Musa Basjoo plants. I got it from a nursery in February. I am in North Georgia. It has grown 7 ft this year. This is it at the beginning:

It's still being slow. I'm really unsure whats going on with it. I fertilize. I really believe the pups are zapping it, but I can't bring myself to remove them lol

Well, I think I may have found the culprit. I never really thought about it but it seems so obvious that my garden nutrients were probably leaching out. I fertilized with control release that should've last two months, though I was giving it about a month and a half. The problem is, the rain all runs off the roof above the garden. That's where almost all the front of the house rain, drains. (Desperately need gutters). The garden tends to flood every time it rains hard, which is basically daily this year. So it occurred to me the ground is probably leaching all the nutrients with all the rain. I fertilized again a week or so ago, slightly more then I tend to, and the banana has already picked back up. The Cana next to it has put out seven more pups lol. And the banana pup is shooting up now too!

Well. Hurricane Irma came through and luckily, it was only tropical storm force winds where I was. I was very fortunate. Though the banana did not like it. Though it survived and will be fine once new leaves come out, it was shredded.

You were very lucky and so were your nana's, I think they look pretty for being beaten by IRMA, just goes to show just how strong they are. Glad your alright!

Banana Update October 2017:

I have cut some of the shredded leaves off, they started browning. And the baby Banana just keeps growing!

Looks a lot different than it did a few weeks ago, your pup looks wonderful. I have to bring mine in for the season this weekend, we have a good chance of our first frost on Monday night and I dont want to take any chances.

Yes it bounced right back! And yes I remember living up North, probably a good idea, your banana plant is gorgeous, I wouldn’t risk any harm to it either! We probably won’t get a frost until December or so. I hope. I don’t think I’m going to wrap them or anything. Just let it die naturally and come back next year!
