I am with Antioch, your first choice not having the other to comment on. I haven't experienced any burning in the sun and the exposure you explain sounds perfect for it...imo.

all hosta are ONLY shade tolerant ...

they do very well in the sun .. its only that they can get ratty looking.. sooner .. than they would in shade ...

to avoid such.. you water more ... and... ===>>> avoid ONLY sun in the heat of the day ... when the sweat out more water .. than the roots can pump up

morning and evening sun is irrelevant .... its all about sun.. in the heat of the day ...

how does your spot sound now???

never forget.. the most important thing in a pot.. is the media... never the plant ...

please always include where you are .. z5 is about half the US .... and varies wildly ...

Windy - Here is an old photo of the Ventricosa I once had, It was planted in the front of my garden and got at least 6 hours of sun daily. It has the prettiest flowers of any hosta, I think.

Okay - I updated my profile info. I always thought I was was in zone 5, but dang, we're apparently in zone 6a here on the SW side of Kansas City.

Well, Donna, that ventricosa certainly looks like it was doing well in sun! Probably it's sport v. A. would also like some extended sunshine?

Ken - I will definitely be giving it plenty of water, whatever I choose to plant there. Almost all of my hostas have to put up with a fair amount of sun... and I try to "drown" them on a regular basis. I just know that some get a little extra-crispy or simply don't look their best, and some seem to thrive in it. I have a Winter Snow and Final Summation - both planted last year in almost 100% sun, and they are looking fantastic this year. Cathedral Windows and Gold Drop, in about 80% sun - also look good. But I do water a lot.

And I've found a way to mix up a pretty good potting medium - one of our local nurseries sells what they call a "professional potting mix," which is a mixture of compost and shredded pine bark. I've been mixing some of that with a small amount of peat, and some additional pine bark. It seems to have worked well overwintering some of my plants, and it drains well (and no ugly white Perlite).

Jo - I do love the look of Antioch, but v. A. looks so pretty too! I'm thinking I'll try to observe more carefully every hour during the day on Friday when I'm off work.... to be sure how much sun there actually is. I may not be accurate in what I said above (may have been looking through rose-colored sunglasses, like the whole zone 5 thing!).

And, if I can make up my mind, maybe I'll do the pot-within-the-pot thing, so I could easily move it if it looks unhappy?

the easy answer is to avoid anything with a yellow or white edge ... or any white at all ... those are the parts that burn ...

i really like the idea of a green..
