We would need to see a photo. When you say something is coming off the spike, it could be a branch which will flower. Keikis usually appear as a small leaf along the spike or from the base of the plant.

Without a better description or photo, I can't help.

Thank you for responding. I will try to get a photo. It looks like a branch, there is no leaf at thus time. If it's a branch I suppose it's going to bloom again from that branch. I've never had a continuous bloomer so I was baffled. Will post a picture when I get her to take one. Each initial spike that bloomed put out a branch and flowered again. I guess it's trying for 3. :) She wasn't sure if she should cut the old spikes off or wait. Will try to get that picture. Thanks again.

No, if its branching, those will bloom. Some Phals are branchers! I have a few and they are very cool. They can look like little shrubs. Usually the branching happens as the main spike grows.

I have a couple of Phals which are still blooming and making new buds since January. I always cut off old spikes, but the branching ones look nice because they aren't long, skinny spikes with just one flower.

I bet that's what she has.

I hope I'm successful at uploading the pics she sent me here goes..... I apologize they are not clear, best I could get from her and I think you can see what I mean. I do believe the one shoot sticking up is a branch growing the other 2 are to show the tips on the ends of each spike/branch -

while burry I think you can see the one that shows the tip is green like its growing, they are all like this. So would they be growing out the ends of the spikes also? I told her not to cut anything off.

Jane you have been so helpful. I posted the pictures. Sorry for the poor quality. Do you think it's a branch and I'm really interested in your opinion of the tip of the stems. Not seen this before.

Those bumps appear to be stubs which are left behind when the flowers finish. They do not look like branching.

She can leave the spikes on until they turn brown or cut them off now and let the plant grow over summer.
