New to Eggplant

I planted Eggplant for the first time this year, putting in just two plants. One has had trouble, with the main part dying and an off shoot just getting started. But my second plant is doing well and has several baby eggplant and several more flowers. So i have one fruit that is starting to get bigger. It is black, shiny and about the size of a smaller orange right now. I am not sure if I should pick it now, or wait. I've seen advice that when it is black and shiny, its ripe and go ahead an pick it. However, I have a tiny one just emerging from the flower hull and it starts out black, so not sure that is the best guidance. Advice?
