pot size and shape for new plumerias

over the weekend i got my first two plumerias ..i purchased the first one at a local garden center, it is in a 2 quart pot, is approximately 16 inches tall with a stalk diameter of over an inch and 12 larger leaves with two tiny ones at the top

the second was a gift it has about 15 leaves and 2 or three new ones at the top and the stalk is much bigger around and more than two feet long, the leaves are very large and shiny in comparison to the first plant it could be that the person who gave it to me just cut it off and stuck it in the pot i cant tell... the new "leaf starts" are much larger on this plant

i need to repot them and i don't know whether i should plant in a short squatty larger diameter pot or a taller deeper "skinnier" pot either way they will get repotted in the fall probably ...or whenever i discover the best time for potting them is near galveston tx. any info on this would be very much appreciated
