Pruning 101 question - where to cut a Y split?

last modified: 9 years ago

I have a couple branches to remove that have some stretching on one side, branches out of proportion and leggy.

The problem branches originate from a stub end of a bigger branch that's directly from the trunk, resulting in a literal Y.

Do I cut above the joint, or below it? Or cut each problem branch back to the nearest node that's within the shape I want?

Any suggestions for finding a good 'universal' pruning basic concepts guide? (Is there even such a thing as a unified pruning theory? I would assume there are some constants that can be applied across the board?)

Photos coming as soon as Houzz stops fighting back...

Problem branches are at 10 o'clock and 3 o'clock.
