Hi Dutch - those sure look like Rocambole scapes to me with their full curl. The large bulbils and first year bulbs seem to indicate Rocs as well. Did you plant them from both bulbils and cloves this year?

I only grow 2 Rocs..Spanish Roja and Russian Red. Both are a couple weeks later to both scape and bulb compared to the porcelains and purple stripes that I grow. I've never planted later than mid October so I can't comment on how they fare when planted late. I may be planting a little later this year because I have plans to grow some fall beans in one of the garlic beds and with a mid July planting I probably won't be done harvesting until mid October or so.

All cloves this year, but some were tiny from the first year mini-bulbs from last year's bulbils; so there were two different sets planted. I did not get a uniform bed from the ferals this year either not in either side. Some did real well and I expect those will be my seed bulbs next fall. I saw some of the ferals still in my sister's flower beds back in Iowa. They were farther along than those in my bed, leading me to think that an early planting would be better than a later one.

We keep getting rain. My Music and Siberians are loving it. I don't think there is a brown leaf tip in either variety. The Music is waist high even with the scapes removed and the Siberian is only a little smaller. They all got 8" spacing last fall and these two seem to be dong very well with that. They are doing beautifully, but my other garlics are either very uneven or just plain suck. I suppose that I will probably over compensate this fall and put some in too early, like say late September, but I intend to put Music and Siberian in mid-October. Those two are my anchor varieties and I know mid-October works for them.
