Need help finding house numbers

I need some help finding house numbers which is harder than I'd imagined. I removed the little plastic illuminated box of numbers that everyone in my neighborhood has and put up some temporary stick-on numbers. My house is getting painted in two weeks and I'd like to get 4-5" tall black numbers.

I prefer a serif font, but most seem to be contemporary, round, sans-serif fonts. I guess I could handle that. I don't want floating numbers. Even the float/flush option numbers are deep enough to create a drop shadow. I'm sure drop shadows are all the rage but I think it just makes the numbers harder to read and busy looking. They'll be on my garage which faces due west so the numbers would always be casting a shadow.

Just simple, flat numbers that screw in place from the front. Prefer to stay under $20 per number (I have 4).

I've checked out Etsy, although not exhaustively. Most seem to be units, the numbers already affixed to something.

Check out Build.com. They have 5" tall numbers in a variety of finishes. They are made by Baldwin and are solid brass. Their satin black letters are $12 each. House numbers

Also google hand forged house numbers...lots of choices but I can't narrow down the font with any competence.

These are kind of pricey but there's several to choose from, maybe they have what you're looking for:

I ended up ordering some numbers from Etsy. They're modern and cast a shadow even when flush mounted. I just couldn't find what I was looking for, and at least these only cost $7 each.

I considered Rejuvenation but they are so pricey. They got enough of my dough for two barn lights.

Gee, around here HD sells plenty of different kinds of old-fashioned flush mount house numbers in different finishes. Don't they do that out there?

Linelle, you just have me a good idea for a gift for my dad. He has everything. Maybe for Christmas?

writersblock: My HD has plenty of house numbers, but I couldn't find anything I liked, or they didn't have the numbers I needed. What's the point of having house numbers if you don't stock all of them?

jtl: There are sooo many to choose from. Maybe it's because I'm also adding lights to my garage that I didn't want to get anything too statement-ish. I just wanted a stately serif font in black that screws in from the front. I have 4 digits and think less than $20 per should suffice.

clt3: Those are nice numbers and I hadn't seen them before. They're just a little too beefy for me.

These are what I ordered, in black. Not the font I was looking for, but I've come around and think it'll work fine on my house. The reviews are good and many.

I know it's probably too late now, but dropcapstudio lets you pick w/e font you want and it's all guaranteed for life.

Mark, thanks. I ended up sending back the first numbers I bought and found just what I needed at DropMetal. I made peace with the contemporary font and love that they screw from the front. :-) Aluminum, powder coated, 4"' $12/per.

lazy, yeah, no problem being seen, since my garage is very prominent and I have a street light right across the street. I would have loved putting the numbers somewhere around my entry porch, but it's too far back and partially obscured by a tree. I live on a quiet circle which has slow traffic and these numbers say "here I am!"

So many house numbers are the kind that attach from the back with floating options. I experimented with one of those and found it impossible to gauge level since the pins can throw it off. And good luck if you want to remove it later. I like to place the number where it goes and screw it in, right then and there.

I love the ones you ended up with! I've been looking for some as well but haven't found the right thing yet...I'm not even sure what the right thing is or where they would go on my house.

Those are nice! Are you done with your exterior work now? Would love to see a photo of the final product.

Mayflowers, thanks for asking. With the exception of replacing a dead tree I had removed, I think everything's done for 2017.

    Before:

New paint (slightly darker siding, same trim). Garage door squared.

    New entry light

One of three new side/back yard lights

Garage door lights (one on either side) and new house numbers:

    New side fence

I'd take a shot from the front, but after four days over the century mark (Fri and Sat were 110), I have some plant casualties and it's not pretty.

Nice selections! You've added a lot of personality to your home.

You're probably getting the smoke too. I saw where SF had hit the 100 mark for only the tenth time in over a century. My son in Davis is suffering with the combo of heat and smoke. It's hot and smoky here too, but not quite as bad as California.

    mayflowers, thank you!

Yes, the smoke has been with us for nearly a week now. You can't smell it, but it's like bad smog and it's oppressive. The heat finally broke yesterday and we're back to normal with fog/smog/overcast in the mornings. SF is terrible in the heat. I've only experienced it there in the mid-90s and it was bad. I would imagine no one has A/C, like me, but I live in a place where I should.

I love your new numbers - I'm going to order some, too - and think all of your updates look terrific!

This morning everything is covered in ash. It's the last day of 100 degrees for us. We don't have a/c either but we're contemplating it. Our first floor stays cool until late in the day. The ceiling fan we put in the bedroom last year is wonderful, like sleeping with a gentle breeze.

mayflowers, aren't you in the PNW? It looks like there's a terrible fire up there, and if you're covered in ash it must be relatively close. I hope you and yours are out of harm's way.

Our climate is very Mediterranean and normally cools off in the evening, even in summer. But we've had a string of back-to-back-to-back days of 100+ heat, just recently and also in June. I wish I'd gotten A/C when I got a new furnace in 2002, but I think I tolerate heat better than most people.

Bluebell, be sure to post a pic when you get your numbers. What color did you get?

Second-guessing myself as I do, I think I should have moved my numbers up a bit higher. I thought they would be too close to the light if I did. I'm tempted to move them up two digits, but don't relish re-engineering the spacing. I may just leave things alone.
