I have heard that too but I treat them no different. I have two breaks which are in various containers they got thrown into at the time of the break and they both appear to be rooting.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot... the branches aren't very thick/beefy yet so I don't have high expectations but I also have nothing to lose :)

DSPs are funny like that. IMO the age of the branch is what makes the difference. If the cutting is too green then I agree with the low expectations but I hope you have some grey wood on the cutting in which case I think you can do it. I think hot and dry (except for rainwater) will do the trick.

All of the Austin/San Antonio group support the observation that rainwater has no apparent negative effects on cuttings being rooted...at least in our climate. I think all of us root outside and let them get wet when it rains. Last spring when my greenhouse was turned into swiss cheese by hail all of my cuttings stayed wet from routine rains for 2 months and they all had white roots coming out. Barbra F. came by to get them to take to her friend's Nursery near Rockport, TX and loved how many roots were visible.

I managed to root three DSP cuttings late last summer with no problems, which surprised me. But maybe they thrive in high heat and humidity?

Kms2 is right, that rain water here in Texas seems to have no ill effect on rooting cuttings. Mine are frequently drenched by rain while rooting, but I haven't lost any unless they were marginal quality to begin with. Now if you live in a cooler area or are trying to root over fall/winter it may be a different story.
