Suckers using for grafting?

I just bought a variegated pink lemon that is drafted on no clue what. First thing I did was to cut the little sucker off without thinking. Now regret it as I think if I would have let it get a bit bigger I could have identified it or get help to have it identified. Is it possible to let those suckers get bigger and use them for grafting after they hopefully get roots? Good idea? Bad idea?

    How to figure out what the nursery used for grafting? I might not work but still will try to root the next sucker. If it works, great, if not, I have tried :)
