Home Depot kitchen cabinets refacing, pricey?

Hi,
We had a free consultation with a Home Depot person today regarding refacing of our kitchen cabinets. He said that we need to sign today to take advantage of their promotion. For a 52 linear feet, (approx 10 base cabinets and 7 wall cabinets) he quoted $32,600. It was a sticker shock. He threw in three glass doors and soft glide for drawers. The work includes the backsplash, granite tops to the four counter tops, one wall cabinet build and knobs. Is it a good price? We have not talked to any other contractor yet. This was our first inquiry about what to do with our kitchen. We signed the contract but could cancel within three days. Living in NJ.
Thank you

I had my cabinets refaced years ago. Not by Home Depot. I figured out later I could have bought new cabinets for a very small additional amount. Have you priced new cabinets?

We have not done that. We measured them today to the best of our knowledge and looked at new cabinets online in Home Depot. Rounding up it adds to $10,000-$12,000. We don't know how much it would cost for the labor. It was our first step of having a free consultation today and we did not do much research ourselves. I have a bad feeling about the price and how it all went down having to sign today.

Aig, I think that is pretty high for refacing. Now for brand new cabinets, maybe not. I understand you are getting new counters as well, but do you love your current layout, lighting, flooring, etc.? Will this be the only remodel of the kitchen you plan to do?

If it were me, I would cancel and do more research. Believe me, they will offer "the special" again. But I believe you will find that this is not really anything special after all.

I don't like to be a Negative Nellie, but trust your gut on this one.

Thank you. I will cancel and do my research more. Current layout is fine but two wall cabinets need to be switched in position to make room for an above stove-top microwave and we need another wall cabinet built to match the rest in height. We also want to remove the second stove top that is on the right and just have the counter space.

The Home Center stores all have their sales frequently.

Is there a reason you want an over the range microwave? They generally do not vent as well as a dedicated vent and crowd the workspace around the range.

I think your issues could be dealt with without refacing unless you really just want a new look to the kitchen too. I would get a prettier vent hood, and yes, remove the second stovetop, but it doesn't look bad.

    Stay away from Home Depot.

In fact, stay away from anyone who pressures you saying, You must sign today to get the promotion!

But back to Home Depot. I had them re-do my countertops years ago, and I don't think it would've been possible for them to have treated me any worse. In a nutshell: They were rude /dismissive /I had the impression it's because I'm female when I was ordering the countertops -- should've left right then, but they had the product I wanted, and I was stupid. They came out to measure, scheduled installation ... guy didn't show ... no concern on their part ... full two months after measuring and paying, the work was finally done. Or, I should say half the work ... after the guy'd installed my countertops, he discovered that my backsplash option wouldn't work ... remember, they'd already been to my house to measure -- they should've realized this wouldn't work ... so he left me with no backsplash. Went to the store the next day to get a refund for backsplash ... no apology, no help for what I could do instead, again rude and dismissive.

Home Depot will never, never, never, never receive a single dollar from me again. Ever.

CANCEL until you have several other bids!

Getting the granuite done by a granite company, and the refacing done by a specialist refacer might be cheaper, and wuill certainly be better.

I don't know if that's a fair price, but it's enough money that I'd look at bids on new cabinets. Even if your floor plan doesn't need tweaking, you could switch the lower base cabs to drawers!

HD is no bargain when it comes to kitchens. They contract the work out with subs. Most of those subs are not the top of the line subs. If they were, they wouldn't need to get work from HD.

Where does your kitchen come out to be 52 linear feet? My kitchen is 15'8" x 12' plus an island and it's nowhere near 52' unless he's counting lowers and uppers separately.

I can tell you I'm having custom cabinets made by the Amish. All plywood boxes with maple wood painted doors and drawers. My fridge and DW will be paneled to match. My island is quarter sawn oak stained and is 80" x 42". My uppers are 10' high so I'm having 42" uppers with 18" uppers above those. Two 36" glass uppers and all the upper uppers on one wall are glass. A corner drawer cabinet.

    All hardware is Blum hardware.

I can tell you that all my cabinets, brand new, will cost me less than what you were quoted for refacing. Granted that doesn't include the granite, but all my cabinets will still leave me money left over for granite. And the quality can't be beat.

Just so you can compare, here are the two elevations of my kitchen. What's not shown is my island.

The HD consultant measured the 52 linear feet. I believe it is less. We do have an island and it has cabinets all around. Any recommendations on contractors in north NJ area? We canceled with HD today. No rush. Though my husband will want something done this year. Thank you for all the responses. I knew I was not crazy thinking the quote was too pricey.

If you are in North Jersey I would highly recommend looking at some of the Amish Cabinet makers in PA. Refacing is very expensive and usually not worth it.

Let's do a little myth busting here, shall we?

The doors and drawer fronts available to refacers today can be second to none in quality. The cost/benefit analysis gets tricky when you factor in the quality of the existing drawer slides, etc., plus the local economy and cost of living. This will vary for every individual. I've seen some very nice reface jobs that were 1/2 of what the big boxes charge.

"Most of those subs are not the top of the line subs. If they were, they wouldn't need to get work from HD."

I know a HD sub and he does excellent work for his direct customers and his HDs. I worked for a HD sub years ago and our stuff was as good as any. Big boxes look for capacity. The bigger you are, the less work for them. I knew a guy who formed a corporation with two other fabricators in different areas of the same state, so together they could get the Lowe's contract for the whole state.

Joseph a lot depends on where you are. You certainly don't get to check their references 3 ways to Sunday like you should do.

But Joseph brings up a very good point. How old are the cabinets and what are the drawer glides like? Hinges? Are the drawers dovetailed? Are there pull out shelves in the lower cabinets. If not, can you add pull outs?

I hired Home Depot in February; it is now December and I still do not have my kitchen finished. They keep sending out the wrong materials, and I get promised a "rush job" for them to actually send the correct items. I don't think that 10+ months is "rushed" - and who knows if I will ever actually get the final, quality product? They put a cabinet in where drawers should be; then sent drawer fronts that were too small for the holes; then sent drawer fronts with the wrong facing. The cutting board split out. There is a drawer that does not close properly. My Lazy Susan doors were placed too far apart, leaving a gap in the middle (where it should look seamless). No one answers my calls.

Go ahead and do it right the 1st time. Get new cabinets. Go get 3 estimates from local cabinet companies. The big box stores are often high when ordering stuff outside their store. I save an average of 30% buying local compared.

Big box stores get a bad rap, sometimes it is very well deserved. What is more important is that you are happy with who you decide to go with. Make sure you get references from whoever they will have doing work. (Our local Lowes gave us the name of the contractor they use for full remodels, so that we could check the work ourselves.) It will vary from location to location, just make sure that you fell comfortable with the decision.

As far as price, a lot will depend on location. Here in the Midwest our entire kitchen (gut down to studs and subfloor) and dining room/hallway (new drywall, doors, paint, lighting) was less than $40k (This does not include the granite counters/sink/faucet and cost for backsplash tile, but does include appliances and lighting). We also got nearly $2k back in rebates, and they paid all of the sales tax for the whole job. I would imagine labor is much more expensive on the East Coast, where the cost of living is higher.

" Refacing of our kitchen cabinets .. The work includes the backsplash, granite tops to the four countertops, one wall cabinet build and knobs. "

To be perfectly honest .. why would you be refacing if you are changing countertops? In the age of cheap RTA cabinets, that are pretty good quality today ... keeping existing cabinets and replacing countertops [sink] makes no sense to me. Do you want softclose, new drawers ...

The only thing I think ... it must be NJ job labor cost.

I will never hire Home Depot to do anything. My cabinets were suppose to be ordered in April, in July they still do not know what is happening with them. You pay up front, and sign a waiver that if they mess anything up, they are not liabel. Why did I do this?

@HU-694292508 I feel your pain. We ordered a cabinet refacing of our kitchen and upstairs bathrooms in mid-February. They were promised in 6-8 weeks. Nine weeks out they scheduled the install for the second week of May. Two days before then, they called to move it out two more weeks. We were getting our house ready to list and the cabinet refacing was the last (and biggest/most expensive) thing left to do. The installer came on the appointed day, did the kitchen installation but discovered that the bathroom materials were never ordered. He placed the order that day but the ETA was mid-July. I was SO mad. But I was very lucky. Our installer was a nice guy who gave me numbers of some higher-ups to call (so I overlooked the HUGE mess he and his crew made). I was very polite but firm to everyone I called. A regional installation manager arranged for a custom cabinet maker to make some temporary doors/drawer for our bathrooms so we could list our house. The installer also found that a pair of cabinet doors in the kitchen had been measured wrong. He had to trim one of them to get them installed. He took the measurements for those too. No one could give me an ETA of those doors. They were ordered on 5/19. Thursday 7/22 we closed on our house. Friday 7/23 in the middle of moving out I got a call from Home Depot Installations to schedule installation of that last pair of cabinet doors. HA! I left a note for the new owners. I am so glad to be done with Home Depot and I won't buy so much as a pack of yard bags from them again.

I would buy products from Home Depot, but hire outside people to do the work.
