Transporting a clematis by plane

My mother has transplanted a clematis from my late grandmother's house. I just bought my first home and I'd like to try to take a cutting for myself. Unfortunately, she's in Minnesota and I live in California. Does anyone have any advice for transporting it on my flight back home?

It is just a cutting or does it include roots?

I know California has some very specific rules about bringing plants from out of state in an effort to control agricultural pests. I would investigate what you are allowed to bring in before trying this since I can't imagine that you want to get in trouble with the ag authorities. I don't know how carefully they check or who they check.

I would have mom root it, then ship it as any other plant during cooler weather. A rooted plant is far more likely to survive shipping than a freshly taken cutting.
