What the heck is on my black walnut tree?

Ok, so I know what webworms are and fight with them all the time. This morning I'm out , checking for webs to cut off the tree when I see this: ( look closely at the dark brown hordes of creatures on the stems) What are they-can't be good-they have already stripped the stem in the foreground. HELP!

The pictures don't exactly look like yours, but the walnut caterpillar fits with the tree.

Yes I believe Amy nailed it. I get them on some of my young Shag Bark Hickories sometimes. It looks like they are in their first larval stage and will be molting soon.

When they head back to the trunk they are easy to squish as they climb down to the soil to pupate. BTK is effective in the early larval stages.
