Of course hiring a kitchen designer is a good idea. But while you are waiting think about some ideas. What do you love in a kitchen? What do you want? How do you use your kitchen? Are you a cook? Entertainer? Is this kitchen involving more than one cook at a time? Are their crafters? Bakers? Do you need a gas stove or maybe the sleekness and functionality of an Induction? Colors? Materials? Marble, Granite, Quartzite? Tile, wood, wood-like,? Slab modern looking doors or heavy farm style moulding? So many things to consider....

I am in the idea stage too. My husband and I just sold one house and have bought a new place with a kitchen I do not love. I am exactly where you are, in the idea and wish stage. A kitchen designer can help keep it all on track and since they know the best (tiler, wood guy, cabinet maker, counter, electrician, plumber) they will support you on your journey.

Okay now to some thoughts. I think removing the soffits would be great. Take down that half wall but be sure it is not load bearing ( a designer/architect would know), Once the wall is down maybe an island could fit. You might take measurements. Although sometimes Peninsulas are more functional. It looks like your kitchen is in the center of the house or at least separating two living spaces... Maybe you want to think about how you utilize the spaces on either side. Is one area a formal area, one a family kind of space... Wood floors throughout might be more consistent.. But maybe you love travertine, Again these are all just ideas. Now is the time to play around and think about what you want and how you live...

There are options with this layout. Do you want to be able to have a table in the nook, or would you be happy ending up with more kitchen space and having to eat at the island?
