My grandparents were avid rose gardeners. Grandma also painted oil on canvas. Grandpa framed her art work.

After she died, I found this little painting on particle board, or perhaps more accurately fiber board, in the basement -- sans frame. I don't think she was proud of it. I framed and matted it.

She had a neurological disorder that made her shake, and she couldn't paint after about 1974. I bought a rubber stamp from an earlier signature for her so she could sign checks. After her death, on this piece, I forged her signature with the rubber stamp where she usually signed her art work, but didn't sign the one she wasn't proud of.

I think this might be an early one from the 1950s or early 1960s when she was just practicing. I hang it in my office, and love it.

Aaaww... that's a great story Mark! My mom also did oil painting. When her eyesight began to go bad, and the dementia set in, she would paint some pretty weird looking stuff! We still treasured those tho. I have a nice collection of her paintings, good and bad, as do many of our family members. It's nice to have a piece of her legacy.

If you want to be remembered, or at least thought about after you are gone for generations to come, oil painting is one way to go. I would like to try it someday.

Does anyone have an idea what rose this might be? At one time, I thought Paradise, but that was hybridized in 1978. She usually dated her work. The last painting I new about was early 1977 -- she painted Superstition Mountain after I helped them drive there. I only knew her to paint on canvas except the one pictured above. Grandpa died in 1979. I suppose it is possible she painted later, without me knowing. She was good with roses, and kept the rose garden going, but I think the rose growing started with him, and I doubt she planted the latest varieties toward the end. So this is probably a multi-colored magenta rose on the market before Paradise. - Ideas?
