Cedar mulch?

I am working this summer on fixing up the neglected beds at my kids' elementary school. I weeded some beds with annuals that the schoolchildren had planted in May, and then put down cedar mulch (weeds were taking over and the soil was like dust). I haven't used cedar before--at home I use a dark composted mulch but I needed something cheap for the large area, and I was unfamiliar with the choices at Home Depot: dyed mulch (which didn't look great) or cedar. When I opened the bags, I found that some of the chunks were quite large, but since I already had it, I put it down anyway. Now I read that cedar is good for pathways and the like, but not so good for flowers. Have I made a mistake? Will it ever break down?
