Did I make a big mistake?

We had our roof done recently and I was torn between a couple different colour options. We finally went with the dark brown shingles and I can't tell if I hate it or if I'm just not used to it because of the contrast with the brick. I'm not sure if it's visible in the picture but our (also recently new) front door is also a dark brown but a different shade to the shingles and I almost feel like the two clash somehow (can 2 shades of the same colour clash?) There's nothing I can do about it at this point but just wondering what people think? The answers could make me feel better or worse but honesty would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I wouldn't fret about it. I like the color of shingle that you chose. The contrast is nice.

It looks good! It will probably just take some time for you to get used to it. It's a big change. Tough to tell from the photo if the front door clashes, but that is something you can remedy down the line if you end up feeling it's necessary.

I like the color of the new roof and the contrast with the brick. For me, it is easier to look at.

Irene Morresey, thank you for your landscaping ideas. I have been wanting to take it out for some time but it's a lilac bush so when in blossom, while only for a short while, it is quite pretty and it pains me to dig it out (even though I would love to).

The original roof looked better but the new one looks fine. I'd be more concerned about that wavy walkway than the roof and door colors. What's up with that?

I think the new roof looks soooooo much nicer. You made a great choice. Maybe you are not totally used to the darker color but I think it looks wonderful.

There is no question that the new roof shingle color looks much better. Your home has great lines that the new color accents. Once you change out the landscaping like Irene suggests, it will be stunning.

Wait--that round green shrub straight out from the front door is a lilac? Must be time for new glasses!!

Really like the new roof. If you think the door is too dark why not paint it a brighter color? Or, a pale grey from the brick.

Thanks, everyone. We have had some neighbours say they like the colours as well so I'm starting to feel better about it. I think it is just a matter of me not being used to it.

AprilShowers, yes, it is indeed a lilac but I have decided that it needs to go. We will probably try to relocate it to our backyard and see if it survives. The entire front garden is going to get a major overhaul.

tooky58, while I would love the option to change the door colour, it is a brand new fibreglass door that we had stained (my husband won that battle) so it's going to stay as is but if we ever move and need a new front door, I'm going to get something that pops - I love bright front doors.

Thanks for sharing! First off, this is definitely an improvement. In your before photo, there is a very limited color palette which can come off as a bleak and boring monotone. By adding this contrast you've brought out the details such as the white trim both on the roofing and around the windows. The best part is that you chose single color shingles, as multiple colors could overwhelm the eyes paired with your multi-colored brick.

Paint the garage doors to match the brick. Don't draw attention to them. The door area needs white. At present, it's a dark hole.

It looks very clean and fresh> I think the colour is a lovely contrast because if you go too close to the house colour it becomes too "matchy matchy" . Good choice

I thought the first picture was the new roof and my first thoughts were blah, yes you made a mistake....but then I finished the rest of your post and love the new roof...makes your house pop more! I really need to slow down sometime and read, just not look at pics :).
