I really recommend Raymour and Flanigan for young adults. There is one about an hour away from Boston. I think it is worth the trip. My youngest bought a sleeper sofa at R&F. They have a good return/replace policy if something goes wrong.

I don't think I would buy furniture without trying it out first. That said, when DD was looking, I sat on many of the chairs and sofas. Most were very comfortable.

She was allowed to order it when it came on sale, then they held it for a good 3 weeks until her reno was complete. Good customer service.

Boston Interiors

IKEA, West Elm, CB2, Urban Outfitters, AllModern (the modern Wayfair) and Craigslist! I bet Boston is great for CL finds.

You don't mention how old he is or how long he thinks he'll be in this apt or even in Boston. If he's young and highly mobile, I'd recommend IKEA. He can leave it behind if he moves.

Another vote for Boston Interiors (I think the closest store for him would be Burlington, about 1/2 hr north of Boston, or maybe Saugus?). IKEA would be a 40-45 min drive, maybe?

Boston Interiors seems like they are always having sales. Another place to try is Circle Furniture's outlet. And, finally, Jordan's Furniture.
