I looked it up and in Japanese it is Sa-guy, in English it is Sa-gay or sa-gee. So I guess it is your preference. I always pronounced it phonetically sa-gay (When 2 vowels go walking the first says its name.)

I think I'll just stick with awesome.

LOL, Vicky! .. a few years ago I found online (why didn't I bookmark it??) the Japanese pronunciation of Sagae and it has three syllables as Babka stated and qualified with the link. If memory serves, in the video the woman said each letter in a word is pronounced in the Japanese language. Be that as it may, I have been pronouncing it Suh-ga-eh since. The two-syllable pronounciation just doesn't sound right in my own head....this from a German-born Polish-descent Canadian. ;-)

Maybe it is the difference between Canadian and USA pronunciation In Canada I would venture say gay but it might like roof in Canada . Two oos together is rufe and in america it is ruff lol I love Sagae no matter how it is pronounced. Yes Jo , it is Aw some Happy Canada Day . We watched the fireworks last night from our front deck It also was Aw -some and reflected from the Shuswap lake

The correct pronunciation is “suh-ga-eh”, but a native Japanese speaker will tell you Americans can not pronounce it correctly. garden and gifts I agree that the ordinary American will never get the pronunciation correct.

They may not know the hosta however they probably know Sagae as it is named after Sagae Prefecture in Japan.
