Remember, in cold weather water can still give off a bit of steam below boiling. Water is always giving off vapour but when the air is cold the vapour starts to condense and become visible. My bore water comes out at 31C and when I water on cold mornings I see "steam". Your water temperature might not have been too hot. I wouldn't give up on your plant yet.

I stuck my hand under the tap to feel it. Felt pretty hot to me :( Although my hands were pretty cold so I can hope it just felt hotter than it was. Maybe the plant went "Ahhhhh, toasty!" instead of "Argh!!!!! Doom!" ? Faint hope maybe?

Fun fact, it was 3c (37f) today. Winter can go away now, please!

I'm in Noonamah, where abouts were you? The first time I went to Tassie I flew from Darwin to Wynyard in November. That was one almighty shock. Stayed with friends at Hellyer. Next time was in Hobart in August, not a lot different. Stayed with friends at New Norfolk. Evenings in a pub in front of a big log fire was nice though.

It's lost a few leaves :( I'm monitoring it. It's my mix pot of normal and variegated Tsangii so I really dont want to lose it.

Tropicbreezent, I'm in Launceston now, used to live in Millner back when I lived in Darwin.

If it ever happens again, just follow it with a dump of cool water. A few seconds of heat on the roots won't hurt them, most likely. We've all stuck our toes in a bath off way too hot water, and nothing adverse happened except a moment of "ouch." I keep my water heater turned down to where even when it's full blast hot, I can't scald my hands. I figure there's no point in over-heating it at the cost of natural gas!

I ran it under cold water a few moments after I realised what happened. Of course now it will probably rot because it got too wet... Dammit!

Big difference between Launceston and Millner. I'd love to do a lot of the bushwalking trails in Tassie but I don't cope too well with the cold.

Update on my poor boiled hoya. It is dying :( Well, part of the pot is, the variegated plant. I spent today taking cuttings of what's left but at this time of year I have very little hope they will take. Ah well.....

Well, it's been a week since my last update and the plants are still with us! Most of it. The normal tsangii is fine. One of the variegated plant started to die. Naturally it was the one I don't have a back up. Of course. It was the one with the inner variegation. I was lucky enough to find another plant of the outer leaf variegated (albomaginated? is that the term? ) variety so I had a spare but of course, that one is pulling through...

That's if they really ARE tsangii of course.. lol. Won't know until I ever get flowers and if I'm gonna keep trying to boil them alive them that's not high on the plants list of things to do.

I get a feeling you might be extra cautious whenever you water them from now on, maybe even super cautious.

I've done this before, didn't kill my Patasitica! No new growth to speak of, so I may have set it back but it's definitely not dead :) There is hope!

Maybe the best way would be to draw the water and heat it as required (vs tap) if you feel strongly about cold water. That way no randomness in exactly what temperature is coming out.
