Do you know who or what may have trampled on it? It looks like it has some nice new growth coming up. I would put a physical barrier around it (plastic fencing, etc) to protect it until it's thriving.

It was likely either deer, the idiot turkey that lost its herd, the gang of turkeys that ditched the lone one, or maybe a neighbor knocking something over the stonewall onto it. We've put a large rock and some branches around it to at least make it less likely for a person or turkey to hit it. I have a wire cage that a blueberry bush outgrew that I might need to put around it.

Good news is that it seems to be recovering again. Nice new growth and perking up.

This is coming late, but if that happens in the future, dip the leaf stem in rooting hormone powder and place it in a pot of soil. Keep the soil moist, be patient and it should root and make a whole new plant! :)

I didn't happen to have rooting hormone, but I put the leaves in pots of soil, and I've still got two potentials (another one shriveled up and has been removed).
